Humans can see into the future.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/...ionsdiscovered
This theory says that, the reason we don't feel a lag in the 1/10 of a second it takes for light to reflect off an object into our eyes, is that our vision may generate an image of what is going to happen in the future. Quote:
But wouldn't this also mean that all other senses are connected to future events? You would have to feel something, before it actually does touch you. Is this likely? that everything we hear, smell, touch, taste, and see all happen 1/10 a second before it happens? I thought I'd share this article, it can be interesting, it can be total bs. |

Re: Humans can see into the future.
I've read that article. I'm not buying it.
I think it's just their excuse to make unaccounted-for events fit their theory of how the human eyes/brain/whatever functions when, in reality, they need a new theory. I can also explain everything ... ready? It's magic! |

Re: Humans can see into the future.
One example they are talking about is like this.
The reason we would see the squares as crooked, according to the theory, would be because the other crooked lines make us think that its going to happen to the parallel squares. I'm still not sure whether or not to believe this may be true. |

Re: Humans can see into the future.
Well yes, we think it is going to happen to the parallel lines which is why there is the illusion, but that still doesn't mean anything about seeing into the future.
I say we already see the image and the brain processing of the already-seen imaging is what does it. That doesn't require any seeing into the future to explain. |

Posting this in CC won't get it respect. I actually am in favor of the theory, it's compelling and interesting. Please, move to CT or re-post there. I'd love to debate it more.

Re: Humans can see into the future.
Sure I can believe that, it's nothing shocking though.
Oh wow I can see 1/10 of a second in the future, thats nothing. |

Re: Humans can see into the future.
How is it nothing though? If you theoretically could see 1/10 into the future via physical means then wouldn't that suggest there would be other physical means to see even farther into the future?
I still think it's an attempt to patch an otherwise failing theory though. |

guys bandwagoning and making "1/10 of a second" jokes is really cool

Re: Humans can see into the future.
I am to lazy to read it but i don't think its really 1/10 of a second into the future. Just that everything we see is already 1/10 of a second in the past and our brain tries to put together the missing pieces to make it not so weird.

Considering the first 7 posts are all people with their seriousness, I think this thread has potential to stay nice and cozy here.

Re: Humans can see into the future.
Yea i skimmed it and i think hes a weirdo. Its already known in psychology that the brain has a tendency to fill in the gaps it doesn't understand. Which can already explain optical illusions without seeing into the future.

Re: Humans can see into the future.
Uhmmmm. This theory does not state that we see into the future, simply that our brain is making an educated guess as to what is going to happen. Just like FFR, where some players adjust there reactions to hit notes earlier due to lag, we adjusted ourselves 1/10th of a second to predict what is going to happen next.

Re: Humans can see into the future.
Well that's just common sense though isn't it? If that's all this theory is then why go to the trouble of the claim that it sees into the future, in any amount of timespan, however small?
In fact, why go into it at all? I thought that was pretty common knowledge. It would be called mental calculations going on after an image is seen. |

*clap clap*
Also, I like this theory and regardless of evidence for it or against it I believe it to be the absolute truth now. |

Re: Humans can see into the future.
Although phrased in a way I wouldn't put it, this has been known for an incredibly long time.
Our brains complete information that it does not have artificially all the time. The brain relies on these mental heuristics, or shortcuts to make it's job easier and more efficient. The only catch is that it isn't infallible. This alone is half the reason people often see or experience things that simply aren't there. Under certain circumstances we can swear we see faces in garbled nonsense, etc. The majority of optical illusions are created by incorrect completion of information by the brain, and this is certainly not something that is new in psychology or neuroscience.

Re: Humans can see into the future.
So if other senses are connected to the future too ... what would happen if you were about to say kick a ball, but somehow you managed to move your foot away 1/10 of a second before you were going to actually kick it.
Obviously, you wouldn't be able to move it away fast enough (or would you?) to avoid the ball completely, so would you feel the impact of the ball as you recoil, or would you feel the impact of the ball normally as you would kick it? Or both? Mind boggling. o.O |
