Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist
Stay away from files with flashy backgrounds. We all know the ones.
You can also use your setup time to explain the concept of the game. Engage your audience a little bit before launching into your performance. If you're the type that can talk to people while you play, mention stuff like how it's been around for 10 years and has over 1300 songs in all. You know, sell it a little bit.
I think your set list should conform to the following standards:
First song: Familiar to a lot of people, fairly easy. You mentioned you had a lot of song and dance numbers coming after you, so let their song choices dictate what you open with to engage the crowd...or go totally against the grain. Your call. You don't need to AAA to impress the uninitiated. You mentioned you can AAA everything under Oni get with regularity, so try Four Blocks Madness. Everyone knows that tune.
Second and third songs: Ramping up the difficulty a bit, some more eclectic choices. Depending on how many Japanese speakers slash anime fans you have in the audience, you may want to steer clear of "those" songs. Gravity Blast with its color gimmicks is an excellent choice here IMO, as you can give a brief introduction to the art of the stepfile. You might also cover the history of FFR with Caprice, but make sure to use the genre wheel when picking it. (I'm of the opinion that this file is better off with BNS, given the red background.)
Fourth song, fifth if time permits: Balls out time. These are the master class files--pick from the unlockables (secret, purchased, tokens) if you can. Otaku Speedvibe Oni, Tenimuhou, Freedom Dive, Holy Orders, Hellhounds On My Trail--these are all good choices. Mention that you can ONLY play these files for yourself if you sign up and get good. Stay away from piano pieces.Last edited by igotrhythm; 04-18-2013, 07:18 PM.Originally posted by thesunfanI literally spent 10 minutes in the library looking for the TWG forum on Smogon and couldn't find it what the fuck is this witchcraft IGR

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist
TWWW is a horrible choice, disgustingly poor use of gimmicks along with a terrible chart that only makes the game look like even more shit than it already is. Bad choice.Comment

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist
STORYTIME
It was the night of February 23, 2010, just after 7:00 PM.
I played Stepmania for a talent show once...I played an old chart I had made for "Red Wings Over Baron" (ok chart by today's standards...not great, but meh...and no, you can't have it) and was not warmed up for it. And I was the opening act, too...but for reasons being that no one else was doing their act with a computer. I could tell the crowd was really into it while I was playing, too.
As great of a performance everyone thought that was (I AA'ed with just over 290mil), I didn't win. I finished 2nd place, losing only to the school's cross-dressing basketball team doing a hilariously awful rendition of "Stop Right There" (or was it "Stop Right Now"?). Well, props to the basketball team because when you see someone kick major ass at SM, you need to put on a GOOD closing act and I think they succeeded...by my school's standards. The money I won ended up saving the Breakfast Club in the process. The story at the time was that they were on the verge of closing down, and when they saw me playing they just decided to put me in because my SM skills would help them save the club if I did good enough. Kept them going for the rest of the year, I think.
It was a good night, to say the least...both for me and the Breakfast Club.
I'd love to do something like that again if possible.
Now, about that setlist...I'll try and stick to Video Games.
Start with an explanation of what FFR is while you're setting it up, then launch right into it.
1. 600 AD in Piano (Classic / 47 / 3:00)
2. Jazzman - Super Mario Bros (Arcade / 52 / 1:33)
3. Monstrous Turtles! (Arcade / 62 / 3:35)
4. May The Triforce Be With You (Arcade / 66 / 1:57)
5. Gotta Catch 'Em All (Arcade / 73 / 3:34)
Total Length: 13 minutes, 39 seconds (oh crap, it's too long)
P.S. If you're at a party and haven't drank any alkeyhol yet, I'd play TWWW just for kicks.Last edited by Nick Skyline; 04-19-2013, 12:01 PM.Comment

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist
Dunno if you're still taking suggestions, but here's my choice for an FFR setlist.
1. Introduction (1:02 / 1:02)
2. Retro City (2:33 / 3:35)
3. Ambient Angels (1:59 / 5:34)
4. Mephisto Waltz (3:13 / 8:47)
5. Playing Super Mario World While Taking Mushrooms (3:05 / 11:52)
I think it's a good mixture of genres while adding a steady increase in difficulty. Plus, I think the audience will get a good laugh at the last song. But it's up to you.
EDIT: nvm, didn't realize the deadline was 8:00 AM today. Whoops.Last edited by jgano; 04-19-2013, 10:06 AM.Master AAA's: 30
Guru AAA's: 1
Brutal+ FC's: 46 (MOST RECENT: The Bird's Midair Heatstroke)
Best AAA's: OVERklock, Mario Minor, Paraclete, FFLBF, Shatterscape, Spaceman, Pitch Black, Requiem -Dies irae-, Queen of BootlegsComment

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist
I'd like to thank everyone for your opinion and participation in this event, I wouldn't have been able to figure out a good setlist for the Talent Show without you guys! I had an extra 2 minutes to perform, so I decided after my ending song on the setlist, that I would finish it off with Tell (practically the national anthem morning music in any school), something everyone can relate to.
Again, thanks for all who submitted, but there can only be one winner:
And Here's the Official Setlist I used for the Talent Show:
Credits for song choices shall be rewarded even if your personal setlist was not used, and thank you Mr. Halogen for taking the time and effort to create a stellar list for me. (You could technically consider this as the 1st,2nd,3rd,4th)Hello (Luke Da Duke Remix)
Blackout [Breathe Carolina]
{Rose}
Ambient Angels
Mario Minor
Tell v2

For everyone else, if you have posted a setlist but it was not used, you have been paid 1000 credits for your time and effort.

Gonna try and get in contact with my friend over the weekend here because he was supposed to be recording the show and see what he's got. It was an absolute moshpit. And when I say moshpit, I literally mean it acted like a moshpit. My principal had to step up to the stage after my performance to calm the audience down.Last edited by gold stinger; 04-19-2013, 12:31 PM.Comment

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist
Oh wow, that sounds ridiculous! Congrats on the great reception of the performance, it's nice to see people blown away by skill at rhythm games.
I wonder if anyone from your school will take a crack at FFR after seeing that. Oh and, thanks for the credits!Comment

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist
Awesome! Thanks for the credits -- it sounded like you had a fantastic time!
Also, the reason why I was able to come up with a really solid set list is because I've played FFR in front of a large crowd at high school, when I was trying to help advertise the rhythm gaming club. The only difference was, we all had our own individual areas in the cafeteria area -- I want to say I attracted nearly 100 students to our area, haha.Comment
