The dress is shown with the shadow side facing towards the camera, and coupled with overexposure this explains the blue-ish tint of the dress. The same phenomenon happens in stronger degrees when when you look at snowy mountains for example.

With that said, the way to more accurately determine if the color is blue and black, is to look at the values. More specifically, the other fabric in the left bottom corner. The value of the black fabric in the corner is darker, even when lit, than the darkest dark of the gold value, meaning the dress has no black in it. It just doesn't add up for it to be black and blue.

Studying how value, light, color and shadow is perceived for painting purposes for 6+ years, I can guarantee with a great degree of certainty (despite the piss poor quality photo) that this dress is not black and blue, but that its local colors are gold and white. Obviously because of the environment and shadows, this shows up as blue and brown in the photo. And the shitty exposure changes in the OP do not prove a thing.



A simple explanation could just be that this dress is one of the many variations, as the Roman website shows this dress isn't exclusively blue and black, it also has white and black, red and black etc. And not to mention that this could just be a bootleg product.

See, thats what i thought. I had a strong feeling that it was in fact white and gold.
But unless i missed something(just woke up and read that) I still dont get why they all changed color for me despite being the exact same pic. My eyes doe.

SK8R43, Your brain automatically interprets colors in comparison to the surroundings to find out the local color. It's why you can tell this piece of wood's local color is white, when its actual representation in color is in fact a bunch of blues on the left image, and a bunch of oranges of the right image (and many other subtle colors btw):


However, if you were to depict an image by it's local color alone, you'd get a very naive image. Color is very much dependent on the surroundings. It's also why the following optical illusion works. The arrow points at nearly identical colors, but your brain interprets it differently because of the surrounding colors.



A question that's often asked by people who want to paint skin for example is what color they should use. The answer is, it depends. There are certain local colors that are part of the entire structure, but how they look changes under different lighting settings.Here's another image of the guy who did the illusion above, painting a face in white light and painting a face with various other lights set up. The right is obviously a pretty extreme lighting set up, but it works nonetheless. And even in the left there's some colors creeping in, like on the sides on the top of his head there's a slightly blue-ish tint.


What they've done in the OP is just change the entire image's color and values around, but that proves little more than the fact that they just changed the colors and values around. It's not proof of anything.

the image was not changed at all. It was on my friends FB wall, i saw it as white and gold, then a few hours later i took another look(the exact same image) and it was black and blue.

I have a hard time believing that is not doctored. I still stand by my statement that the original image is white and gold. The values of the dress are still different from the values of the black fabric in the bottom left corner, and that point of reference is something you conveniently don't see in the animated gif.
I'm starting to think it really is a viral marketing plan by the makers. If not, I'm dumbfounded as I've never seen fabric behave that way before lol

And while I might think the bootleg was a possibility this IS from the original tumblr poster who took the image in the first place.


While I can't really understand for the life of me color theory if it is white and gold then the possibility is highest with the "doctor'd because they wanted attention."
