1) brain auto calculates the timing between each jump -> modify according to the relative distance to the next jump.
2) spot each jump 3) let my subconscious take care of the single notes 4) jumpstream'd Pretty much how I deal with jumpstream. If it slows down I can usually adjust really quickly because of step 1, but if it speeds up it's harder to tell so I just let my brain grab the beat from the song instead of the relative distance. I don't even think about steps 2 and 3, but I know thats how I read jumpstream. edit: in fact this method works in quad and handstream for me too. I don't even have to think about anything when I am streaming. It could be why I have always found streams easy for me as long as I can hit the proper speeds. When I play js files it's like autopilot mode for me haha General tips though are either choose to pick out the jumps and automatically know to hit the singles or pick out the singles and know to automatically hit the jumps. They're both about equal in difficulty to learn (it's really easy), I'd say it would be better do it both ways and then if you get stuck on some JS chart you can look at it another way. (try these general tips on makiba and etude on a nimbus, since those are very easy jumpstream files) Some more advanced stuff If you know there's a long one handed thrill in a jumpstream file remember where it is and be ready to hit it. If there's a wristjack in a jumpstream find the first note of the jack (if it's 2 arrows) and do a quick tap (instead of putting effort into wristjacking you just tap twice) If you're playing Stepmania and there's a freeze arrow in your jumpstream, know that the difficulty just got a lot easier (usually) because now you only have to concentrate on 3 rows pretty much. Lastly some tips for handstream. With handstream there will always be 1 hand that has to hit both 12 or 34 while the other does a thrill pattern, as long as you know how the file goes you can just autopilot mash with one hand and then thrill with the other as needed (try Air light) edit: one more thing I'd like to point out http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...ViPLlh0#t=173s When you're doing retarded jumpstream like this (aka the only file in ffr that has anything like those patterns is chaosmaid) Look for when you have to do 1 handed thrills, and then if there's a (12)(34)(12)(34) pattern take that opportunity to let your mind reset so you can read more 1 handed thrills. if I had any sort of suggestion for BPM and Jumpstream it's to only use the colors to help you measure where the song gets faster without BPM changes. Otherwise try not to pay attention to them too much as they don't really help that much. What definitely helps you get into the mindset me and icy mentioned is probably playing on a single colored noteskin on Stepmania. I know for sure my habit of reading the streams this way started early, and I came to SM before FFR.
edit: oh yeah I'm no FGO AAAer or anything, but I do know how to make it easier for myself to read js. So take my advice if you want, but icy definitely has the right advice. |

I'm not really sure how I read some of the more complicated blobs of notes. I play strictly by sight and coloring the notes doesn't make any difference. I guess it is just a matter of practice and memorizing what a chunk of notes feels like to play.

I don't know about you guys, but my play depends heavily on color.

Wait you guys think when you play?
This is news to me. I pretty much just stare at the screen and my fingers just go where they are supposed to. Okay maybe that's an oversimplification, but it's kind of true. Maybe that's why I suck at bursts?? P.S.: Jumpstream is easy

When I play 4k JS at lower speeds I focus on each note/jump/chord individually (colour of notes help too)
When they rev up to imba 200bpm++ that I can't hit accurately/confidently anymore I focus on the 8th hidden jacks that inevitably form in denser jumpstream |

I really dunno how I first learned JS, I believe I got to thew point where I can just mindlessly do most any JS simply by playing icys files all day.
Except extratone pirates outro, still tryna learn how to Combo and keep PA, I can AAA the first 75 notes of that epic JS, then I lose it. And since idk how I learned JS this thread is relevant to my interests. |

What I'd usually do is turn down the music volume until where it's audible by a little bit and listen to key taps. I listen for a specific key tap pattern or rhythm and just follow that. Now if it's JS over 185 BPM then I focus more on the stream than the actual jumps themselves. Handstream is more or less the same thing. I make sure my brightness on my computer screen is not too high because that can mess me up big due to how blurry it gets.
I learned how to JS quickly since it's just "clicked" for me. I would take your time with it and learn to be consistent as well. There is nothing worse than having to play JS and be dumping goods or splitting jumps due to low consistency. |
