It got really boring after test 5. I'm sure I missed every single one though. I don't know anything about music notes.

Your score indicates that you do not have absolute pitch.

Apparently I don't have absolute pitch, so I was pretty lost on some notes. However I know the notes B, C, D, and E off the top of my head so I can go off of those and figure out the other notes, ie I have relative pitch. I scored somewhere in the middle.

extremely hard to do with no reference. If it told me what a C was before the test started I would have done a lot better.

Test was too long.

2 years of piano didn't really teach me any of this so I guessed everything.

Not bad considering I have less knowledge than a third-grader when it comes to music and pitch.

I've always been jealous of people with perfect pitch. So, about a year ago I started learning pitches (by piano, so I'm more attuned to the timbre). The first pitch that came to me was Eb. I realized I could hear it anywhere, sing it without reference and didn't need anything to help me. That's what encouraged me to keep trying to learn the pitches. I'm still trying to learn them all much better, but I'm much more busy nowadays.

The tough thing though is that I've always had good relative pitch, so when doing melodic dictations, I don't always know if I should use more of my pitch memory or relative pitch, so it's a weird combination. For this test, I tried using ONLY my pitch memory, which is FAR from complete. There are a few notes (G, A, D to be exact) that I simply can't sing alone without reference and they can be difficult for me to identify individually. Other pitches like E, B, C# and Ab are semi-memorized (weird to think about memorizing tones..) Pitches that I don't mess up, and got correct for each one of the little tests are Eb, Bb, F, C and F#. (heh, the first four are fifths apart)

And that is my explanation for how I got this weird score..

Pure tone score
19

Piano tone score
23

This. I have relative pitch, but three seconds is not enough time for me to think about it.

Haha, about the fifths thing, that's how it is for me too. Not too surprising though really. If anything, I can DEFINITELY tell any fifths apart, ascending or descending. This is probably actually pretty common in "relative pitch" people, but I could be wrong.

It's a really interesting thing. I'd like to do research into the complexities of perfect pitch, absolute pitch, acquired pitch, etc. Being in that neutral and less common section of people who don't have perfect pitch but still have semi-absolute pitch or just pitch memory makes me really want to know how this stuff works.

I play piano by ear pretty well, I never learned how to read sheet music efficiently, but the stuff I can play can get pretty complex.

But I can't do well on this test because everything I do is from reference. You can't just play a random note and expect me to identify it lol. Let alone 80

From what I hear, those that have absolute pitch can identify "pitches" from random sounds such as when you slam the door or drop a pen on the floor. Even though I passed this test, I can't do such things lol
Maybe it's just that I have a really good relative pitch instead of its counterpart (I can recognize pitches of fire alarms or car honks tho)

I have this weird halfway point in between. If I hear a door squeak or something I can tell you what partials of the fundamental tone were expressed to cause the squeak, but I can't tell you what the pitch of the fundamental is. However, I've played guitar so much that I know about where E and D are on the scale, so I can refer to those and tease out what the pitch is. This test moves way too fucen fast for me though.

This is probably why I know the notes I know (E, D, B). And if I want to figure out if a tone is an A note, I would think of an E in my head and automatically know what an A sounds like, since it's the succeeding note, if that makes sense. I can use that technique for most notes rofl.

heh. Yeah, this test was a bit too quick to be able to use relative pitch effectively for each tone, but its purpose was to weed out the people with perfect pitch. I can also hear certain noises (alarms, vehicle beeps, etc.) and tell instantly what note they are if the note is C, E, Eb, F, F# or Bb. If it's something else, it takes me no more than 2 seconds to use relative pitch or reference music (in my head) to figure it out.

This thread is much more interesting than the color thread (imo). =D

Exactly this -- it doesn't give enough time for me to ponder what the pitches are.

If I'm given a reference point, then I can figure out what the note is in comparison to that reference point (relative pitch). But I won't sit here and say I have absolute pitch.

Also, sick scores, 0 O_O
