Re: How come god created the tree of knowledge?
You don't have to believe this but based on the Bible's stories themselves,
the tree of Knowledge was merely a symbol of God's authority to create rules and regulations. By not eating from the tree, the humans would show that they respected His right to rule. By eating from the tree, they were saying that God was holding something good back from humankind and that He didn't have the right to rule over His creation. (Meaning that even though God created humans, they could do their own thing and be fine and didn't need God to direct them around.) |

Because otherwise Christianity would have to make up another story about how we messed ourselves up and the ever loving benevolent God was basically helpless to stop us from ruing everything.

Re: How come god created the tree of knowledge?
My take on the story of Adam and Eve:
God said that they could be happy in a state of bliss, or they could have the knowledge of good and evil. People claim the world we're on is in a fallen state. I don't really think so. Yeah, there's death and disease and all sorts of unpleasantries, but there is so much good that wouldn't exist were it not for those bad things. I personally like revelling in good things. When a doctor miraculously saves a patient that should have died, I revel, just as an example. I weep for tradgedy. It's part of human life, and (at least when I'm in a good mood, heh) I appreciate the utter twisted beauty of it all working together.

It's comments like this that trouble me. It shows that you obviously put no thought into what you believe, and instead blindly accept what you're told as the truth.

Re: How come god created the tree of knowledge?
Isn't God supposed to be all-knowing? If so, wouldn't he be able to see into the future, and wouldn't he know the outcome of creating the tree before creating it? If so...what was the point of going through all the trouble?
This is why I'm an atheist, by the way--because I'm a firm believer in logic, and all religion has too many logical flaws (aka "it might not make sense, but you must have faith") for me to really believe in any of them.

Free will and divine preordination contradict each other.

Re: How come god created the tree of knowledge?
actually they dont.
pre-ordination means that you were chosen to do ____ before, but if you choose not to, or if your choices preclude you from doing ____, someone else can still do it. pre-ordination doesnt mean that you will choose to do ____ or that nobody else can do ____, but only that you should, and if you do, you'll succeed.

Re: How come god created the tree of knowledge?
and i'm kinda with laharl here.
the first commandment that God gave was for adam and eve to multiply, to have children, but they couldnt do this without the knowledge they needed from the tree of knowledge. the "commandment" God gave them not to eat of the tree of the fruit of knowledge wasnt so much of a commandment as a choice or ultimatum. To bear children, they had to leave the garden of eden, and eat the fruit, because God, being just, couldnt just throw them out of the garden. We have free will, and God had to give us the choice. and the choice was made.

Re: How come god created the tree of knowledge?
Well, how do we even know that the bible is the truth? Look at it this way, history is based not on facts, but on what we are told in the present. Who controls the present controls the past. Ever read a novel called 1984 where they rewrite history so that lies are believed to be true? Honestly, there is no proof that anything happened in the bible because we cannot prove the past. I do not go to church or anything, but I do however believe in God because life just seems like there has to be more to it. And I think God (if there is one) doesn't interfere with us just because people like Eve are going to do something they're not supposed to. He gives us the choice of free will and that is our gift and our right. He doesn't just 'let' things happen. But I like hearing other opionions too and I'm also open to the possibility that we could have evolved by evolution. I'm undecided.

Re: How come god created the tree of knowledge?
Obvious you weren't paying attention to what you were reading. I have bolded the reason as to why the tree of knowledge was planted in Eden.
Genesis 2:8-9 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and the he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden and the tree of knowledge of god and evil. Genesis is from the Torah and in the Jewish faith their is no devil, therefore the serpent is nothing more than a serpent. Last edited by jewpinthethird; 11-7-2006 at 11:00 PM.. |
