Default How was your day? (Dawson Incident)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/internatio...872084,00.html

Quote:
One woman was killed and 19 people were wounded yesterday when a black-clad gunman opened fire in the cafeteria of a busy college in Montreal. Eight people were left critically injured before he was shot dead by police.
The rampage began at about 12.30pm when the gunman, described as a college-age male dressed in a trench coat and black boots, got out of his car near a shopping mall in the centre of the city and began shooting an automatic rifle at random.

He then entered the campus of Dawson College, a university preparatory institution with 10,000 students. Once inside, he headed for the cafeteria and took up a position near a vending machine.
"At first he was just shooting into the air," student Kayla Diorio, who was at the scene, told the Montreal Gazette. "A guy next to me was telling me: 'It's going to be OK.' Everybody was screaming and crying."

Hundreds of students fled down Montreal's main shopping street. As news of the shooting spread, nearby shopping centres were evacuated and Montreal's underground shut down for several hours as police searched for possible accomplices.

The woman killed by the gunman was in her 20s; she died later from her wounds.

Police arrived three minutes after the gunman entered the cafeteria, officials said. "They saw a suspect shooting inside the walls of Dawson," the Montreal police chief, Yvan Delorme, told a news conference. "So the first policeman took charge of the situation, and shot in the direction of the suspect, and the suspect died."

An office worker at a building overlooking the school told the Gazette she saw police dragging a young man outside.

"They were dragging him by the arm," Andrea Young told the paper. "He was totally limp and there was blood pouring from his head. He was dressed completely in black with dark boots on. He was very seriously wounded. They handcuffed him, turned him over and he wasn't moving. Then, they covered his body."

Police dismissed suggestions that the violence had been racially motivated or connected to terrorism. "There's no information that leads us to believe that it's something other than what happened at the scene," said a spokesman.

Speaking last night, the Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, said the country had witnessed "a cowardly and senseless act of violence".

He added: "Our primary concern right now is to ensure the safety and recovery of all those who were injured during this tragedy."

Montreal has been the scene of two previous campus shootings. In 1989, a gunman shot dead 14 female engineering students at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, screaming "I hate feminists" before killing himself. Three years later, a professor at Concordia University killed four colleagues.
I have quite a few friends that go to that school too, none of which were harmed. My girlfriend's friend's brother's best friend got shot in the head and I think he died

It's sad how there so many senseless violence in the world. I watched this in the news today as well. They said that 12 were wounded that time.

Haha, I'm not some Tupac follower or anything, I'm just saying that it's possible to get shot in the head and live and Tupac was the first example that came to my head.

It's quite sad that people resort to this kind of thing. Not only does he accomplish nothing, but innocent people get injured because of one's stupidity.

Apparently the suspect is well actually WAS 25 years old and originated from Shrilanka. He didn't go to school at Dawson or anything, he's just some random person who decided to walk in and shoot apparently.

Could it possibly have been a mental disease or some psychological disorder? I find it hard to just suddenly come up with the idea of going into a school and attempt to kill people.

Well as much as everyone would like to know all the answers, alas the police are slow and seriously too french. Just translating the whole scene into french for all the dumbasses on the force is going to take forever :P

So, I'm really glad that some of you see fit to **** up a serious topic not posted in the GBin.

Robbie, it's got to be terrible to be close to something like that. Not close as in you indirectly know someone affected, but to be in the area and that age. I hope you're doing okay.

Personally, I might be the only one not affected as much as others. I'm just used to remaining calm, my mother almost passed away on us twice within days a few years ago so when I heard about how some of my friends were in potential danger well I really didn't react at all. A few of my friends showed up on CFCF12 and talked with reporters but all you could understand was "sadfdf;gdsg" due to all the crying

EDIT: The guy I mentioned who got shot in the head is the boyfriend of a close friend of my girlfriend's. So my girlfriend is hopeing she shows up to school tomorrow to bring the good news that's he's still alive =\

We were talking about this today in History and about Canadian gun control etc. It's a really sad thing that this can happen. If another thing of this sort were to happen within probably six months all the schools and public places in Canada would probably go through some security changes, eg. Metal detectors at doors, designated police men to schools. It's a shame, at least the last one happened seventeen years ago.
