Default 1 hand play

I'm learning 1 hand and I was wondering how the *----* do you do rolls or staircases with 1 hand?

Thx in advance.

Well that's precisely why 1 handed play is difficult. There's no "way" to do them... Just do them. Slowly you'll adapt and be able to do them.

Take my advice, don't learn 1 hand style....unless you only play FFR.
But if you want to play Stepmania, i'd definitely learn Spread style over 1 handed easily.

stair cases are like this:

as for rolls:
all they are is a hold but you have to keep moving to get it to count. ending in a "Yeah" means you got it.

I'm not a very good player, so you might want to see if better 1-handed players offer some advice. But for me, I handle the right-up-down-left combination in a roll or staircase by sliding my middle finger from the up arrow key to the down arrow key. That's assuming it's fast enough that I can't easily hit the arrow keys separately in my usual fashion. Granted, this probably isn't the best way to do it (same for how I get up/down doubles with one finger), but it usually works for me. I suspect it will fail, or at least not work as well, on harder and faster songs, but for what I usually play, this is often enough to get me through this pattern.

As for the opposite pattern, left-down-up-right, this gives me trouble. At slower speeds, I can handle it. But I can't slide my finger upwards from the down arrow key to the up arrow key, so at higher speeds I'm kind of stuck. I just end up missing them and only getting 3 of 4 arrows if I'm lucky. I'd be interested in hearing suggestions on how to hit this pattern one-handed.

P.S. -- Isn't a roll either right-up-down-left repeated or left-down-up-right repeated?

Rolls come with more.

If you can't hit the keys that fast normally then it is the best way to do it. I usually need to do it on 240bpm+ streams, but for someone who's slower it probably will be better to do that at slower speeds.
I also do this on other patterns whenever I need to. Patterns like 62862686268626862.

If it's fast, treat it as a 42 and 68 double. If it's too fast to do that, then mash 28 with one finger. It takes practice and speed to do it well.

I think it's any 4 arrow pattern that repeats itself.

If you play for a while on SM, you can become really good at one hand. There arer some godlike one handers.

I think that's the first time I've gotten some form of confirmation that sliding from up to down is OK/good. I understand that the better you are, the faster the song will have to be before you need to do it. I probably need to do it on slower songs than you do. I think that if I get a pattern with just three arrows, I try to get three fingers in on it. I know I've used the index for down/2 before for dense patterns on the right side, but I'm not sure I've used the ring finger for up/8 with dense left side patterns very much.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to remember the 42 and 68 double idea. I can try the 28 mash as a sort of backup plan. Mashing does seem to work sometimes. I think my recent 370 (out of 372) combo on 8-Bit Day Dreamer was a result of a lucky mash in the heavy stream part(s). I'm honestly surprised that I actually hit all of the arrows in that section, even if it was mashed. (I think a tempo change or something at the end caused the 1 miss I got on that play.) Normally, I do try to hit arrows and don't intentionally think "I'm going to mash this now", even if that's basically what I end up doing in order to keep stay alive.

im a vet 1 hander, but i play one handed wierd and most people say its slow but...

i use my index for down and left and middle just for top and ring for right... Staircases are a breeze and i only have touble with right-up trills because of weakness in my ring and middle

The only time my middle ever leaves the up button is to do down-left trills...

I play different than stratos.

Middle: Down and Up
Index: Left
Ring: Right

Pinkey finger feels weird. I even hate using it to type with my right hand.

staricases arent that hard, it is just pattern and remember the pattern and once you read it make sure it is on beat and then simply do the pattern.

Dronak, I think we are complete opposite one handers.

You have a better PA than me (I can't AAA Mario for the life of me)
You suck at LDUR (I suck at RUDL)
You've been here 2 years (I've been here .5)
You're overall 5k (I'm overall 1.5k)

Have you tried screen shrinking so you can only see the bottom of the "READY"? That gives you a bit more time to see jumps and jacks (haha), but still lets you seem to do rolls/staircases/stream better.

One hand play is easy. Start from easy songs if you're good go on and on and on and on. Get the point bud?
