Hi folks. I just got infected by this. At first I noticed alerts popping up at the
bottom right of my desktop like "your computer has a virus" or "click here to remove virus" etc. It looks different from MSN alerts (larger print and size). Then the IE browser defaults to "about:blank" but the page says that I must click here to remove the spyware. If you got this, you've already been infected, but DON'T click the link. It'll only make it worse. Anyway, it leads to a site called "antispywarebox.com" that seemingly sells antispyware products. Don't buy it. I'm not sure what kind of virus it is. But it opens your computer up to allow other trojans, keyloggers, and spyware to get in. I've tried all kinds of Antivirus software, like Symantec, Adaware, etc. I even tried System Restore to an earlier date but nothing worked. It's been a real pain trying to get this out of my comp system, but with help from lavasoft forum (makers of Adaware SE) I manage to get rid of it. I hope none of you get this. But if you do, here is the link to read. It was really helpful for me. (THANK YOU CALAMITY JANE!) http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showforum=36 Lee3169 |

Antispywareboc.com has a spyware virus. Now that must be something. I must warn you ahead of time. If there was a pop-up when you enter the site. There is a 95% chance the pop-up was the virus attacker. Most sites only has viruses from there own files and not by looking at the site. Of course, if it was a goverment site, then we have a big problem. So, the virus was captured by either a pop-up, or you downloaded something at the site.

Usually if anything on your computer tells you that you have a virus, and it isn't your anti-virus software, do not click it.
AVG is a very good program indeed. |

Well, most spyware have a purpose. Mostly to advertise a product by researching what you browse. Malicious ones are created though.

Why do people do stuff like this? What do they hope to gain? I mean how can they get enjoyment out of messing up hundreds of people?

Viruses like this are actually created to sell the anti-spyware you saw advertised. You catch the virus and then it refers you to this site, and says that it is the tool you need to remove the virus, then once the gullable person buys it, it says it has removed the virus but then you get a registry problem or something and they try to sell you their registry repairer. None of these softwares are any good, because all they do is work in collaboration with the virus that has infected your computer, and rips you off. I'm surprised scams like this can survive if anyone out there is trying to shut down these sorts of things. It would be so easy to buy the 'antivirus' software and see who gets the payment, then arrest them.
In short, no one is wasting their time making these kinds of things. It's very profitable and preys on people who are gullable, don't understand the internet, and trust technology too much, not understanding that people behind the technology are using it to steal from them. Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1 became Windows Defender Beta 2 a few weeks ago.
Get that. I have never had a virus. |
