Ehhhh, I'll just agree to disagree since this is coming from someone who said FFVIII had a woozy battle system and disliked junctions. The paradigm system in FFXIII was awesome enough to forgive the rest of the game imo.

the supports in Awakening are really, really good and they make you want to keep your characters alive, unlike any of the ones for the GBA or the DS ones that make you kill your units to unlock Paralogues because you don't wanna do it but you have to

I was stuck for like two fucking years on that part because it was my first RPG and I was trying to not do battles so I could experience the story. I finally forced myself to grind enough to get Rikku to poison the fuck with her Limit even though he's suppose to be immune to it.

There was no way I was about to turn back after that

Paradigm shifts and job choices make the party thing worth it, though, and it adds a bit of difficulty if you don't like a specific character.
