Literally this. Also figured out that hatching eggs gives way more candies for that pokemon than catching it. Ie I hatched my first bulbasaur and I have 6 candies for it.

Also hatch 10km eggs to get some rare ones that aren't in your area. I hatched a Hitmonlee, and my gf hatched an aerodactyl last night.

Also you get a fair bit of stardust from defending gyms.
