Everything on the album Campfire Headphase by Boards of Canada. I could post a link to every song, here's the most important cathartic one to me:
Tears from the Compound Eye is a song I can't listen to unless I want to taste some salt running down my cheeks. Something about it just seems to sum up every single existential anxiety, depression, everything is cleansed when I listen to it. I also get powerful mental imagery of stuff and it's inspired some crazy drawings of mine. This also hits me pretty good but in a much less salty way. It's just intense the pulsating of the guitar strumming, that catches resonance into the chorus, it's like something moving very fast is aligning. It's cool. I love all of MBV by My Bloody Valentine, the entire album is a great ride with peaks of heavy hitting stuff. Only problem is that it tends to lower my mood afterwards for awhile; leaves some emotional debris.

This thread is the pinnacle of sweetness. That BoC song is glorious, hits the right chords.
And of course, everything out of Noname's list I approve since we share basically the same discography lel. Not to forget: Amon Tobin - Morning Ms. Candis Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto - Berlin (Not a cathartic piece in itself imo, but mesmerizing enough to bring you into a trance, which can be quite soothing at times. The whole album and Vrioon are a must have.) |

Been getting into The Best Pessimist's stuff lately. Beautiful stuff.
Lights Of Your Innocence represents his style quite well, I think, so if you like this check out the rest.

Good stuff VisD.
That Alva Noto song also brings back memories, been awhile since hearing that song and I recall the whole album being solid and quite a trance. Some really heavy shit: Celer - Delaying The Entropy, In Emptiness, Forms Are Born Stars of the Lid - Requiem For Dying Mothers ^I could write an novel on this song alone, fuck. It's one of those songs where the title along with the music illustrates such an immersive story and feeling between people, somehow. It feels like it captures the mood of someone being by the bedside of their dying mother. How did they do that? Stars of the Lid - The Atomium, pt 3 ^This one is cathartic to me for a weird reason. The whole song feels like a reflection of someone on opiates thinking "why am I enjoying just staring off into space more than anything else? What have I done to myself?" i think the video captures that in a way too (album is avec laudenum (contains opiates), which makes sense with the heavy, nodding sounds in the album for most of it). Celer - Thinking The Globe Is Exploding and the mother of all cathartic tracks IMO (dunno if it's been posted): Brian Eno - An Ending

Good picks, that reminds me that I haven't listened to Sigur Ros in ages.
IDK why but despite it's incredibly cathartic sound, Darkness Before Dawn always makes falling asleep interesting. Here's some more droney ones: Tim Hecker - Dungeoneering William Basinski - dlp 3 Loscil - Sickbay

Your picks are fantastic, Spenner. Darkest Before Dawn is really good too. So many great tracks here...
I think I'll post some more before I go to bed: Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words - This Room Seems Empty Without You This to me is one of the most depressing tracks out there... that state when you feel solitude to the point that you actually feel like you're being absolutely torn apart silently. Celer - This Thinking Globe Exploding Mono & World's End Girlfriend - Part 3 (Mass Murder Refrain / Palmless Prayer) The entire album is really good, but this part is unarguably the most cathartic for me. It's a very visceral experience for me, I can't really seem to understand why this is so painfully depressing to listen to. Nonetheless, can't seem to stop myself from tearing up every time I listen to this. William Basinski - Part 3 (Variations: A Movement in Chrome Primitive) This has a slightly less depressing and isolative atmosphere compared to The Garden of Brokenness (mainly because there's more going on) but this to me is one of the best tracks Basinski has made. |

In reverse order,
That Basinski track is definitely one of my favourites. To me it spells out helplessness, mood swings, the circular nature of the track really gives this impression. I picture a majorly depressed person in a rocking chair. I've never heard Mono &WEGF, but that track was very intense. With those types of post-rock songs I always picture decay and things alluding to a life fallen apart. Really intense song, I don't think I need to elaborate on why; I feel a similar response to what you'd expect. It's very beautiful. That Celer track is one of my all time favourites by him/+her (I forget, rip). Just the history of Celer is enough to ensure that every track has some level of cathartic feeling. To me this song has always reminded me of a more transcendental version of Darkest Before Dawn. Very similar feeling of deep breathing in the music too. That first track is also an interesting pick, have't heard it before, but it feels isolating/empty for sure. Glad you guys have good tastes ![]()

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster - Exegesis
Hauntingly awesome build up with cool use of vocals. Nordic Giants - Speed the Crows Nest (live) http://vimeo.com/66600339 One of those bands that needs to be seen live (hence why a live video link) EARTHMASS - Luna Dawn (Keep, Relic & Ritual) Stick with this one and it is a thing of beauty (Prefer listening to this one late at night with headphones)

GY!BE - Static
The speech about god always gets to me for some reason. It almost sounds wonderful.

Dev already posted Orbital - Halcyon and On and On so I won't repeat it here (would have posted it otherwise)
This scene from Dredd (if you haven't seen the movie yet, go see it or get spoiled below -- really beautiful sequence here): The actual song (Ma-Ma's Requiem): Brian Eno - An Ending (Ascent) Amethystium - Calantha Not sure if this counts but I find the chorus of this song really cathartic -- Alex M.O.R.P.H - New York City Conjure One - Center Of The Sun (Solar Stone's Chilled Out Remix) Incubus - Aqueous Transmission will post more here as I think of them Last edited by Reincarnate; 02-8-2014 at 10:57 AM.. |

Yeah holy shiiiiiiiet even typing this post is incredibly lagged up, gonna link from now on.
I'm really glad this is on youtube, one of my favourites by Robert Rich, very reminiscent of those Celer tracks posted, but a bit more ethereal... Robert Rich - Seascape http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3SOAHSwZ3g I can't explain why, but it depicts a seascape to me truly as well as a romantic painting of one would, with a lot of texture. Power of suggestion? Maybe. But that's part of the art too. It sparks your stream of consciousness journey.
