Re: Songs of the Week (May 11, 2013)
Devil's Music Box - Song was dull and boring, sounds like you threw it together in 5 mins for the sake of trying to get an easy submission for the game. I hope this wasnt a serious attempt in making a song because if it was you should be embarrassed. Chart was just as derp as the song. Thankfully I AAAd so I wont have to touch this again.
Enkan No Kotowari - Song was pretty nice to listen to, chart was ok, JS/HS is always fun to play. Some of those 32nds threw me off, but arent really awkward to where they are an issue. Heartsifter - Song was decent, chart was pretty fun. tetris - Nice to see some hip hop being released. Song was a neat approach, not much to say. Chart was straight forward, minute long songs are good when you just need a quick play. Throwin' Down - this song was pretty lol, wasnt able to enjoy the chart as much as I wanted to because of madcuzbad on jacks(especially anchored jacks) and those disgusting [14] jump jacks into hands. bleh. VALLISTA - song was meh, nothing really interesting, chart was pretty retarded. Didnt play through all of last weeks, but the two I played through were the veteran charts released this week, so I'll just review those real quick Waterfall - Love this song, so fun to listen to, surprised me when I saw it released. The chart was pretty decent, at some points it didnt feel right with the song, but Im not up to par on how to tackle stepping piano charts(still observing for when I decide to step), so not saying its wrong or anything, just felt off based on how I was picturing the steps to the song lol. Anyway, it was fun, though the song in a way gets repetitive, but its certainly an enjoyable 3 minutes. MEPHISTO - This song was pretty sick. Listened to the preview first and had to give it a go from there. Wasnt a huge fan of the chart because its a bmah chart, but its wasnt horrible, so replaying it is an option. lol |

Devil's Music Box: I guess this isn't really my cup of tea, but I didn't have that much fun playing this file.
Enkan No Kotowari: This file was interesting and had some neat patterns to it, that's all I really have to say about this one. Heartsifter: I don't really have much to say about this one, didn't stand out as being memorable among the others, especially my two favourites from this week. Throwin' Down: Psychostick! The song was hilarious and the steps for the song were pretty good. This was one of my favourite files this week. VALLISTA: This was my other favourite file this week. Nice job, LG. This one was really fun to play and I would definitely play it over and over again. |

Because the song is so simple. One instrument, straight 16ths. Perfect recipe for a boring file. It was obvious that it was a cheap attempt to get Simfile and Music Producer titles.

what's so solid about a song that's equivalent to an intro of a half-assed african puppet show for kids

I will now remember the song as the song of the puppet man.

Also, it's certainly more entertaining than sleep or fractured. I'd rather play DMB. Quote:
Which are like drowning in pools of literal shit. All of those have similar sounding to a bunch of other stuff in the game. There's maybe ONE other music box song I am aware of in the game... I fail to see how you can call it boring. It sucks you aren't giving it it's fair due. |

Re: Songs of the Week (May 11, 2013)
DMB literally hurt to listen to. I cringed so bad I think I pulled a muscle.
I have less of a problem with the amateur composition, but I do have a problem with the like, default MIDI sounds. Next time try to at least make it sound like you spent longer than zero seconds mastering it? Please? Generally I expect stuff in FFR to feel like it took longer than 5 minutes to make (for song and simfile)

Re: Songs of the Week (May 11, 2013)
For comparison, I'll use AJ's first song on FFR.
Faint Breath is also compositionally pretty amateur, what with the recycled beats and default fruityloops bass sounds and stuff. However you can tell at least a minimum of effort was put into making it sound like a well-produced song. There's dynamic changes and a variety of instrumentation... it's pretty listenable despite its shortcomings and I have no problem with that kind of song in game.

Re: Songs of the Week (May 11, 2013)
It kind of saddens me that people are always complaining about recent songs ingame being too boring (Renard, beep-boop buzz stuff, etc.),
and when I try to do something a little different it's shit on. I'm sorry I'm not a professional music producer or use FL Studio or whatever, it's obviously not going to be the best. That being said, I was hoping people would find it as a fun little jack file, and looking at James May's comment (he can't be the only one that finds it fun), I'm perfectly happy with how it turned out. Actually noticing a trend in the people that are expressing their dislike of it, it's really no suprise to me. To be honest, I was expecting the reception to be a lot worse given the posts/comments/whatever of the community recently. |

Look, it isn't about being different, it is about effort. Add percussion, change up the rhythms, just.. do something else. It doesn't sound like you tried hard at all, that's all there is to it.
If you really are genuinely concerned about how it sounds, ask other musicians. There is plenty of them here on FFR that can give you tips, but don't play the victim because people criticized you.

Re: Songs of the Week (May 11, 2013)
I will definitely be playing Devil's Music Box in the future for jack practice. The song is simple. One of my favorite symphonies consists of a 8 octave scale in the first movement, and the last movement is basically the reverse of the first. Simplicity isn't bad. Yay, subjective stuff.

Not annoyed at you so much as the judges. Songs have been rejected for production quality before and it would have been pretty simple to say something like, "hey Jake this is a fun file but the song doesn't have very high production values, we'll conditionally accept it if you can show the song to some people in the musician's forum. Once you get it mastered nicely it'll be fine to go in the game" There everyone wins. In fact you could still do this pretty easily. Honestly just needs a few dynamic changes with like, a little echo to make it sound more music box-y. File could stay the same and everything.
