This is actually a phrase but w/e. It gets on my nerves:

"For all intensive purposes"

It makes you sound like a jackass. Plus, it's ****ing incorrect. @_@

Do people say that or did you mean to say this phrase?

"For all intents and purposes"

I didn't bat an eyelash at 'intensive purposes', but that doesn't make nearly as much sense as intents and purposes does. I'm sure I must've used 'intensive purposes' before, and I would have used it to mean 'For the purpose(s) that matter/are the most common/pertain to this discussion'...which is neither all intents and purposes, nor intensive purposes...

Cool, I'm glad I'm not the only one with irrational dislikes for certain words.

cranky (and to a lesser extent, grumpy): I hate it when it's applied to myself and it somehow gets me more annoyed

lorry: sorry to the British people, but this reminds me more of a carrousel or some sort of ride at the fairgrounds than a truck

soda: POP!!! (or if we agree to disagree, at least soda pop) [seriously, the first time I encountered this word was in an Archie comic]

real: only in the context of an adjective. Far too often, people say it's "real good" when that is grammatically messed up. It should be "really good". That's just an example.

nerfed: dumb gaming terminology I never seem to understand in its entirety. Also, I'm far more familiar with toy Nerf guns.

facility: when used in replacement of the word "bathroom/washroom". Why do some people say this?? I'm not aware that this alternate word is even culturally constrained.

dapper, diapir: two different words, both sound like "diaper" jeez

huh: I used to dislike this word, as the American counterpart to Canadian "eh", but now I think both sound equally stupid. If you literally say "huh" and listen to how it's pronounced, you sound like a dumbass. If you literally say "eh" and listen to how it's pronounced, you sound like a hick or geezer. Funny thing is, I catch myself saying "huh" a lot more these days. I try to avoid using both and replacing them with "mmm" instead. That seems much more neutral to me. Anyways, that's why I crossed this one out. There goes my irrational self making no sense whatsoever...

whilst
I agree with this one. Sounds way too much like "whistle/whistling" than "while".

I probably have a lot more but I can't think of anything else at the moment.

people who say 'huh' on forums, IM, or anywhere on the internet for that matter, are generally dumb asses anyway. so +1 bmah

Think

The dumbest use of this word is when someone asks a question only to be slapped in the face with this word.

People have actually said intensive. My 10th grade English teacher -of all people- was one of them. @_@

I knew this guy that would say "HUH???" in a startled way every time he didn't immediately understand what you said, which was 80% of the time..., but huh can be a cool and nonchalant response, depending on how you carry yourself.

Language is beautiful! I don't care if you speak without proper grammar, it's a good way to connect with people and see how relaxed they are. We use speech for relations, to experiment with expressing ourselves and what is around us. Language and communication is a playground!! It can vary from rigid and confusing, flowing and lovely, and everythin in-between

also I think it's p annoying for someone to correct me when I'm just acting a fool to myself, fully aware of what I'm saying. like correcting "anyways" to "anyway"...

ANYWAYS.....
context matters a lot, therefore i dont hate words

oh and just throwing this out there, I don't think any of you could have survived living with my mother, as terrible as she was at remembering the names of places and spelling, and phrases, idioms, etc. she would get tongue tied saying the simplest thing, but it was impossible to correct her. I guess after awhile, being annoyed by those sorts of things just sort of melts off of you. you start to see it in a more light hearted way, and crack jokes. (just not at their expense) sure tho, get your kicks. I don't really think it matters, as long as what you're trying to say ultimately comes out of your mouth. it's a learning process, so why be nitpicky

There are predefined definitions and pronunciations for words. If you say it a different way or with a different meaning implied then it is wrong.

Not trying to argue against anything anyone said. Just pointing that out.

Those words were predefined by people, and can be subsequently redefined and reused in artful ways. Misuse is different from adding more levels to a word, or using a word differently for effect. It really isn't that black and white, language never has been, seeing as it's all about trying to explain something from x level on another level entirely. (its multifaceted)

lol its like some sort of idea of we got it down now guys!!, better not change the status quo cuz CLARITY but then things like memes happen and before you know it we're all talking like robots and the counterculture fought a war with the Days of Olde and won rather than language growing naturally so we can say what we're thinking better and articulate instead of arguing over definitions and how xxx people sound like retards

deduction bros *taps head* lol p.s. sorry for interrupting the flow of this typical ffr thread of sharing OMG quirks!!! with unabided thoughts
