Default Homeless People

I wonder if anyone here is as touchy about homeless people as I am.
When I was in Chicago last weekend, I was walking down Michigan Ave. and there were A LOT of homeless people, anyone who has been there probably knows what I'm talking about. Well there was this skinny 14-15 yr old black girl there wrapped up in a few blankets with a sign that said "I'm Just Hungry" right across the street from Tiffany's. Even though I must've seen at least 25 homeless people that day, for some reason this image sticks clearly in my mind, and thinking about it actually brings tears to my eyes. Up until recently, seeing homeless people out on the streets was quite the unfamiliar thing to me. even though there are many homeless people in Detroit, most of them are in shelters of some sort, or at least, not where I can see them. Something about that image though... It is literally horrifying. I am loosing sleep over this, (as if I didn't have enough problems tacked on to my agenda.)

How does stuff like that make you guys feel?

Ya get desensitized to it eventually...just like everything else...Good to know you have some compassion though. Some cases are sad, most are a result of the idiocy of the person.

I live in manhattan. I pass about 10 bums every single day walking to class and then again walking back. Plus the stand of bums asking for donations to feed other bums.

I have no respect or care for people who are unwilling to get a job. They are a burden on society and f- them.

On the other hand, if they provide a service for me (such as opening the door to McDonalds or doing a dance), I am more than happy to pay them for that service.

My favorite signs are the ones from the bums around Times Square that read "Why lie. Give me money for booze, drugs, and hookers." I've seen many a bum with a sign similar to that. Cracks me up. Some of them actually have TWO signs with a long message, and they'll sit there flipping the signs back and forth so you can read it.

Also, there are some people who pretend to be a bum just for the money. Their actual job is being a bum. I give these people more respect and credit than the real bums. Because they live in houses and choose to work as a bum. Not the best career, but at least they have a job.

The 30 yr old women on the side of the road, who looked perfectly able to get job, as well as the fat man near the freeway recieved very little of my sympathy, but this was just a young girl (14-15) with almost no way of supporting herself. Whatever misfortune she had run into was more than likely not her fault. Assuming she isn't a runaway, however, then it is likely that either the legal system or her family has failed her in some way. It is cases as such that make me wish I had billions of dollars spend helping these people get back on their feet.

Also some of these people you are talking about, may not be ABLE to get a job due to circumstance.

My mom works near skd row in downtown LA and you ahould see some of the
hobo-camps they've made there. Some of them are Huge. It's like 2 tents connected
by refrigerator boxes, tarps, and whatever crap they can find. It's pretty cool.
Then there are the ones that live under thebridges by the LA river. they're stinky.

Yeah, homelessness in Chicago's a bit of an issue. Or at least it was the last time I was there.

A lot of them sit there and look pitiful. A few accost you for money.

Some play the drums with buckets, and sound pretty good.

Others still, semi-bums, play music on the streets and probably get a decent buck. I heard some playing Outkast, but on jazz instruments. It was really damn good! So Fresh So Clean, I seem to remember. Good stuff.

Suprisingly, some 'bums' have amazing musical talents. No joke. There's a street in my city called 'Scarth Street' with alot of cafes and diners, lots of bums go there with a guitar...drums.. I saw a guy with a violin once :S But yeah the music they play is amusing. These are the people I've actually given money to when walking down a street.

Yeah,
There are lots of them in Washington D.C.

This guy had a sign "GEORGE BUSH GAVE ME A NICKEL! YOU SHOULD GIVE ME A NICKEL TOO!"
And i was amazed at how many nickels he got..

But the weirdest thing happened. He started following me.

Way to go with that, Mich. I pass bums every year at Otakon or whenever I go through Central Park. Honestly after a while you just kinda get apathetic about it all, or at least after the 15th bum. I feel terrible about thinking that way but whatever.

its sad my mom used to work at a homeless shelter/job assitance place. About 80% of the people there had mental problems and needed medication to remain capable of holding a job. I've kinda become apathetic to the bumbs in my area though cause 2 of them are pros and 2 are what they call "urban explorers" they come in and out and are perfectly capable.

One of them sings to everyone for money.. probably one of the funniest guys i've ever met.

I think it's a bit upsetting seeing people out on the streets. It makes me see how lucky I am to have a house and everything. I don't usually give them money...only because most of the time they are on the streets because they messed their own lifes up by doing drugs or something. I saw a sign before that this one person was holding and it said " Be good and give me some money for food." then I saw one that said "I just want food." The girl was only about 16. So yea...I think it's a bit depressing.

I've never been too cool with the beggars. I heard about a panhandler who supposedly made around 60 grand a year, and didn't have to pay taxes since he was unemployed. His wife thought he was an investment banker. And then there was the guy who offered to have sex with me in exchange for a taco or cigarettes. And the guy who threatened to piss off a bridge onto my crew. Or the guy who sits off a highway exit ramp in a wheelchair, but wheels himself around using his supposedly useless legs...

I mean, it's sad, but I can't see myself empathizing with people who beg for money when I see people lined up outside the Labor Ready office at 5:00 every morning. There is opportunity, and some people just can't find that initiative to take it, especially when it's so much easier to get handouts.
