They go together, overall just says how much you've played and average tells how much time you spend actually playing each song and getting a good score on it. In my opinion, average rank is more important simply because it does tend to display skill a little bit more than overall.

Neither are better- they measure different things. This is like asking "What is better, velocity or temperature?"
Average Rank=The average rank you get from playing a game on FFR Overall Rank=A ranking of your Grand Total score to others. I think.

Imo, average rank is more important because it demonstrates your actual skill level and ability. Overall just stands for playing a lot of games, and getting consistently high combos.
