Laptop's gone silly.
Can anyone make head or tails of this?
Last night it was working normally, but now it's like a small heater. Processor isn't doing much but it's hitting 70-75°C (158-167°F) and the fan is working overtime. I've tried restarting, killing pretty much every process through Task Manager, booting in safe mode and placing it in the fridge for an hour. Nuffin. Thoughts? Fixes? Smug mockery? |

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
If you have tired everything then you could get a cooling pad (A pad with fans on it that you put your laptop on) that's what I had to use on my old laptop.

i hope placing it in the fridge was a joke. condensation on electronics = disaster. those temps are pretty high.. like supermoe suggested, a cooling pad will reduce temps a bit. are you experiencing any lag/performance issues from this?

The fridge is a BAD idea. It might be cold, but it is moist.

Fridge was indeed a joke. Any other fixes apart from cooling pads? I can't imagine anything can mess with the hardware of a laptop while it's off, and I haven't installed any major software in weeks.
The plastic case is getting HAWT. And yeah, FFR's been jittery since this morning. Last edited by supermousie; 11-6-2011 at 12:17 AM.. |

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
Get some can air and take it to the fan/heatsink area. Also kill some of those 119 process using msconfig. You should also get your thermal compound reapplied.

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU I just ain't got no cash. The heatsink/fan area is clean as a potato. I'll get some thermal compound. Let's see if that changes anything :P

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
When the fans are spinning fast is there any hot air coming from the vents of your laptop?

Yeah, that's the weird thing. The processor is idling, but the air coming out is hot enough to burn my fingers.

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
Turn it off and let it cool then power it on and let it idle in BIOS. If the temp gets very hot like it is now return for warranty. If not do a recovery.

Righto, the warranty expires in January. Thanks for the help.
Oh, well I'll do that. I'll be posting from my phone for an hour or so. Last edited by supermousie; 11-6-2011 at 12:48 AM.. |

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
Send it in and they will probably reapply thermal paste to the cpu. Although I don't know why it would be wearing down if its still under warranty. Did you accidently drop your laptop at any point?

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
The largest impact my laptop has gone through is failed quad arrow smashing. Oh, and the warranty expired this January. @_@
I let it idle in the BIOS menu and though it was still warmer than usual, it was nowhere near as hot during normal operation. I'm running some tests now and it's decided to warm up my house even more. |

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
Holy Shit 119 processes ? :/
Anyway, the fridge was a really bad idea, if you haven't cleaned it up in a long time, that might be dust in the fan. I also recommend you to save what you need and format your disk to give your laptop a second life |

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
As stated in the OP and my post following the OP, I killed most of the processes, the general heatsink area is dust-free, and I didn't actually pop it in the fridge.
svchost.exe is taking up >9000 of my megahurtz. When I killed it, the core temperature dropped about 20°C. Still too hot though. :/ I'll apply thermal paste sometime next week, but until then, the laptop stays off. In the freezer. Maybe if all fails, I'll get a solid desktop and migrate everything over... |

Re: Laptop's gone silly.
Granted I'm really not good at this type of thing and the computers I've owned have always been low end, and I've never run used a quad core, but I've never seen processor activity quite so low. Is it normal for 2 of them to basically not be doing anything? Even the first one's activity is kinda low...and also all over the place. I would be worried it's infected.
