actually 3.95 is one of the most unstable stepmanias out there with broken noteskins and theme support and a load of internal code errors also it never was an official release of stepmania so a load of code is added by people that didnt know 100% what they were doing, that's why its unstable.

sm5 on the other hand is being worked on by a team of people that know what they are doing, there are some bugs here and there, but because its active development a load of bugs get fixed
