read this poem this is the one phycic was talking about in another topic, notice what it says at the end
the lesson of the moth
By Don Marquis, in "archy and mehitabel," 1927

i was talking to a moth
the other evening
he was trying to break into
an electric light bulb
and fry himself on the wires

why do you fellows
pull this stunt i asked him
because it is the conventional
thing for moths or why
if that had been an uncovered
candle instead of an electric
light bulb you would
now be a small unsightly cinder
have you no sense

plenty of it he answered
but at times we get tired
of using it
we get bored with the routine
and crave beauty
and excitement
fire is beautiful
and we know that if we get
too close it will kill us
but what does that matter
it is better to be happy
for a moment
and be burned up with beauty
than to live a long time
and be bored all the while
so we wad all our life up
into one little roll
and then we shoot the roll
that is what life is for
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist than to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty
our attitude toward life
is come easy go easy
we are like human beings
used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves

and before i could argue him
out of his philosophy
he went and immolated himself
on a patent cigar lighter
i do not agree with him
myself i would rather have
half the happiness and twice
the longevity

but at the same time i wish
there was something i wanted
as badly as he wanted to fry himself

archy

"we were like humans used to be before they became too civilized to enjoy themselves"
its about life, its a great poem, good message
makes you think.

Instead of telling us what you'be been preached, discuss your own ideas of what is valuable about life.
I like to think of it as the others disagreeing with the religious but...

So you don't want me discussing my beliefs, and you're assuming that I've just been fed some kind of religion and have just taken it at face value. AND, you somehow think that I'm shallow enough not to let my faith affect my actual values. Wow. I find it funny how you don't want me expressing my values and beliefs, yet you're now bossing me around and telling me what's "wrong."

But it's all right. I was in the mood for a good laugh. You know, we're all expressing our opinions and beliefs here, so if an opinion or two has do deal with religion I suggest you don't viciously attack it.[/i]

Look, about 50% of posts in CT turn in to Athiest vs Christian battles. All I asked was that you not do this again. Thanks anyways.

yes alain is right, usually all ct discussions turn into religious discussions, people post religious things and think thats critical thinking, well its not and its a lil annoying. ct=critical thinking that means you actually think about it not post what offends you religious wise think outside the box thats what critical thinking is about. if everyone thought outside the box do you know how interesting it would be in here? all you here about is religion, lets give that a rest.

Eeeww... I can't believe what happened while I was gone. The real critical thinkers have all been replaced with those who only spurt out "aesthetic philosophy," who dismiss all spiritual thinking and try to label it as useless religion, who are so caught up in trying to be politically correct that they forget what they learned in elementary english classes, and start demanding that others keep their mouths shut if it involves anything they would uncomfortable about.

It seems that all you really hear about is trying to avoid "religion." If I mention my Christian faith, why don't you try tolerating it like you would be so careful to do with anything else? You don't have to attack it unless you really want to.

And it seems, like you really want to.

well typist people attack other people on religion in here because like i said before thats all you hear about and these threads usually turn into religious discussions. I personally find it annoying and childish. People wouldnt attack other people on their religion as much if it wasnt mentioned so much. once again stop thinking inside the box, really think about it and post, people will care what you have to say. so we can all stop the reliousness on here and talk about something else.

Well falcon, I refuse to bow down to the gods of secularism like you do, so I'm sorry if you can't respect our differences. Once again, spiritual thinking is not "thinking inside the box," and if someone believes that, it's a spectacular demonstration of how that person thinks. Remember, secularism has gods too, so if you want me to stop talking about mine, I guess you should stop talking about yours. But then, not much would be posted at all.

So there's no reason to abolish religion. Or proper punctuation or capitalization. (HINT, HINT)

Falconsfan, its a nice poem in all, but thing bout it, (note: i am atheist, and i have depression) It kinda made me think of suicide when i read it. THINK BOUT IT. now look at this section of it,
we get bored with the routine
and crave beauty
and excitement
fire is beautiful
and we know that if we get
too close it will kill us
but what does that matter
it is better to be happy
for a moment
and be burned up with beauty
than to live a long time
and be bored all the while
so we wad all our life up
into one little roll
and then we shoot the roll
that is what life is for
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist than to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty

And I kinda think of it this way, From what i know of life it sux pretty bad and isnt the moth talking of the beauty of suicide or somethin? That confuses me... lol

I think the moth in that poem was viewing it's suicide as an unfortunate price to pay for witnessing or bieng part of true beauty, but one that it was willing to pay.

As for living life like it's your last day. If you take it literaly I think it's a little extreme, but maybe don't take life for granted is a better way to say it. You can't know exactly how long you have left so try and live with little regret. Enjoy it while it lasts and make the most out of it. You've all heard the saying "If live gives you lemons make lemonaid." I say if life hands me lemons I'll sell the them and buy something that I really want. You know, just do what you can with what you've been given and sample as many things as you can. Personally I think that life is some sort of test that were all being graded on, as if someone is evaluating us on our ability to succeed based on what kinds of obstacles we are able (or unable) to overcome. Either that or it's totally pointless and it just happened for no reason, if that's the case then just do whatever hell you feel like. I still can't figure out which.

Or if you take door number three I'm an idiot who's so full of shit it's flying out of my ears and I have no idea what I'm talking about.
