I don't know how I didn't notice this. One of my favorite battle systems(and game) ever.

Re: Favorite battle system in an RPG?
Legend of Mana's. Simply because there was infinite combinations of weapon, and techniques you could use. It always was fun to use bows and spears in that game, too.
Mana games just take the cake for best Battle System, in my opinion. Oh yeah, Persona's Battle system too, is really good. I liked the interchangeable skills and attacks you could use just by switching out a persona. Last edited by Emithith; 07-19-2011 at 06:04 PM.. |

Re: Favorite battle system in an RPG?
Yeah I didn't mention it in my original post but I agree. The battle system itself is great but the only thing that kind of annoys me is a lot of the enemy's weaknesses don't make any sense.

Re: Favorite battle system in an RPG?
timed combos in Legend of Dragoon made the necessary tedious boring random encounters, actually quite fun

Re: Favorite battle system in an RPG?
Definitely agree that the Paper Mario games had the most enjoyable system. Timed hits made the battles much more enjoyable.
Honorable mentions go to Wild Arms (characters were able to use new abilities as the battle progressed) and Pokemon (the limitations that it places on the player for development). |

Re: Favorite battle system in an RPG?
My personal favourite is the timed defense system in mario & luigi superstar saga. Enemies would come at you in 1 of X pre-defined paths and timings, and you'd press the jump button to jump over them to dodge or counter-attack - for each area, you'd have to learn the 'tells' and timings of each enemy, but once you know them you feel like a boss. They get harder and harder as the game goes on, making it very skill based - I once picked up the game in the last area just to play with it, and I couldn't survive at all, I was so out of practice, haha.
One of my favourite attacks is in Mario & Luigi, Bowser's Inside Story; there's an enemy that shoots bullets at you, and as they get closer they turn invisible! Pure timing, pure skill.

Re: Favorite battle system in an RPG?
From all of the RPGs I played (which is not a lot, I have to admit), I prefer the whole Mario & Luigi series and FFVII's battle system.

Paper Mario made it feel like you were there hitting the enemy with your hammer or curb stomping them. I also love the classic turn based.

Turn Based for me.
But I did love Board Based like Shining Force on the Sega Genesis. Oh my nostalgia (talking about Shining Force)

Re: Favorite battle system in an RPG?
personally I think in turn based combat styles you have to prepare more, and if you can do math, you can strategically plan out your plan of attack to know when and who will be hit in your party etc.
