It IS pathetic but there's a reason ppl do it
like if you were to score an own goal in soccer at the world cup, expect yourself to be killed after losing the game. People have invested a lot of money into betting for their own team and if their own team doesn't win or if it's the fault of one of the players, then they'd get shot. |

quote from wikipedia: Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga (13 March 1967 – 2 July 1994) was a Colombian footballer who was shot and killed in Medellín. It is widely believed that he was murdered due to his own goal in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, which supposedly would have caused gambling losses to several powerful drug lords. scary shit |

Thatskier are you seriously defending people who have murdered other people over a game? You must be reading Kommisar's post or something because it didn't necessarily conflict with OneHandNow's.
And yes, some "it is what it is" rationalization counts as defending or at least accepting. I don't give a shit if there's "a reason people do it" -- it's a ****ing bad reason. |

I'm never visiting Vancouver.
I can't sacrifice my safety to go to that barbaric, rioting, crazed-drug-addict-full city.

The only part that's true is the drug-addict-full city. And that's only East Hastings. Other than that, you're pretty much in one of the nicest places you'll ever go to.

The reason people don't freak out about golf, well there's a few reasons: 1. It's an individual sport, so there's so many people to root for it's not like you have an army supporting one guy like a sports team, 2. Golf isn't an adrenaline pumping fight-filled intense sport which generally reflects the attitude of the viewer. When I was younger, I'd watch some of my local Quebec league hockey games. I used to play as a kid, and I would love to see these older guys skate and outperform me in every way. It was fascinating! Now some of them have gone to the NHL, even on my favorite team Vancouver. They're like hometown heroes and yeah, it would be a big deal to see them lose. But some people may feel harder emotions regarding a loss; I just anticipate next year's performance as do most hockey loving Canadians.

Everything Arch0wl said x 1000
Kommisar: Getting emotional over games is fine, if you don't invest some emotions into a game it's going to be boring as hell (hence why I don' watch sports), but there there is absolutely NO excuse for childish barbaric behavior to come of it. In my opinion people who invest that amount of emotion into it are a bunch of ****ing losers. They're just a bunch of spectators and whether their team wins or loses makes no real difference in their life. It's entertainment and should be kept as that. I have no idea how you can defend these people, and tells me there's a problem with sports society. Social engineering at it's finest. |

This was truly pathetic. Hopefully more people turn themselves in and redeem whatever shred of dignity they have in them.
Some of these actions were savagely barbaric and ultimately quite saddening to me. It's a shame to see fellow members of the same species act like a bunch of brainless lemmings. It's one thing to rationalize this behavior and explain why it happened, but that doesn't mean it should have happened. It was almost definitely incited by anarchists, but it was the asinine populace that perpetuated it. Quote:
This is a human trait permeating the world that has little to do with the city itself.

Also, this is mostly irrelevant to the issue-at-large and I don't think you, Chris/Kommisar, are guilty of this, but I can't shake the feeling of hypocrisy from people who think it's okay to get so riled up over a football/hockey/basketball game while simultaneously condemning anyone who invests themselves in an internet-related diversion they disapprove of. Games are games are games. Doesn't matter how much artificial significance people assign to it; they're still diversions. |

Woh jeeze. I posted this because I thought this would be a simple 'lol' but we've got a lot people who are passionate here. Especially those people who don't want people rioting over hockey to represent the country.
You know, there aren't that many stupid people out there. We know its just an isolated young person group mentality who start rioting more for the hell of it instead of hockey. I'll say it again. Embrace it! Its fun! Silly! Exciting! If there is a riot going on, join 'em! Damn the reason! Teachable moment! Football is not really like that way in Texas. In actuality, many people scorn the Dallas brand for being too corporate rather then passionate. (The other Texas team sucks so no one cares.) I would probably say the better examples are Pittsburgh, drunkards who start a lot of one-way rivalries. Philadelphia, tailgaters of dog-shows and rioters of baseball. Or maybe Oakland, where the fans are literally associated with gangs and stab people on stadium stairs. Those are some pretty obnoxious American sports towns. Quote:
Welllll I do make dumb depressing posts, but I say not this time! I'm the one saying just roll your eyes and don't worry about your 'reputation', as though the whole world is going to be judging Canada with an angry scorn. Although I see Arch0wl's logical points, I don't understand his emotion over it. He shouldn't be so worked up over this one.

Though aside from our human barbaric senses of belonging to a sports team, making the playoffs is incredibly beneficial to the economy of the said city. Vancouver went to game 7 and sold out each game with 100,000 people outside watching from screens. If that isn't stupidly profitable I don't know what is. When the game's over, everyone goes to bars/restaurants around and they're packed to the tits. It gives a reason for people to go out and socialize, all the while profiting the local economy. So hey, maybe it is a dumb game with primitive satisfaction, but it brings back to the city.

Yeah, sporting events here in Texas can be extremely beneficial for the schools that host them, so I understand you there. Though I'd imagine those benefits are crushed when you riot over your loss.

Also gambling. Forgot to mention that.
A good deal of those guys were drunken douchetards so that's also to take into consideration.
