SQL is a database query language, i.e. you give the database a question, it gives you the answer. You could ask for a list of all the names of the people in the database and it could give it back.

An SQL injection is sending a query to their database so that it gives itself to you. You can't directly access the database, but you can use online forms or w/e to trick the database into thinking 'Sony' sent it a query. Sanitizing their inputs would mean it would be impossible to use online forms for SQL injections.

Unless you know how to program or how databases work otherwise, I don't think I could give a better explanation. I might not be 100% correct though.

unprotected sites construct queries something like this from the data you put in

SELECT rank FROM players WHERE username = 'yourusername';

because it is interpreted dynamically this lets you do an sql injection attack by e.g. sending your username as blah' and 1 = 1; DROP table players; --

SELECT rank FROM players WHERE username = 'blah' and 1 = 1; DROP table players; --'

what's the solution? literally using mysql_real_escape_string() once anywhere on that page will double any quotes, preventing you from escaping the string and writing in code.

That just made this whole thing a lot of humorous, I would assume something as big as Sony would at least try to block something like that. Thankfully the only Sony console I have is my PS2. Time to go play some other things, and wait to see if Sony get's hacked a 14th time.
