The awesome part about science is that it gives you a far more beautiful and poetic view of the universe than any mundane religion can offer any day. It's such a privilege to live during a time when we are now beginning to understand our place in the cosmos much more intimately. It's a privilege that, relatively speaking, nobody before you had the pleasure of knowing.

It's one thing I'll always appreciate and love for as long as I live. To be literate in modern science is extremely empowering and emotionally moving.

So even if we aren't talking about judging reality on evidence... I can sure as hell tell you that, as Feynman put it, nature's imagination is so much greater than man's -- she's never going to let us relax.

The age of neither the universe nor the earth is mentioned, so no conflict with scienctific estimates arises.

thanks resident retard nyokou

what does "scientific advancement" even mean in the context of this graph

what are the units by which it is measured

how did this person measure this shit

and why does it look so shitty and obviously thrown together in two seconds

i have no problem with a graph like that which actually backs its shit up, but i've seen that graph so many times that it makes me want to become a hardcore christian so i don't have to be on the same side as the moron who made that chart

The chart isn't being measured by anything. It's reflecting the tolerance of advancement. You really can't measure scientific advancement, really. That's kind of why I think it's really biased. It only focuses on the restrictions on advancement during the times when the churches had owned most of the land and power. It's correct to an extent, though the scale could be wrong.

You take things too seriously don't you?

The graph isn't meant to show in exact metrics how much religion influenced the progression of science and society in general, but it shows (in generality) how religion created 'Dark Ages' of science.. if you saw videos that Marcus posted, you would understand what I mean.

There's no way to measure human progress or scientific progress - no doubt about that. However, the graph is simply telling us (in layman's terms, or graph) that there was a period of stagnation and darkness in the progress of science and humanity in the age of XXXX - XXXX.

From the author of the rant where that graph was introduced:

"Note about the graph: No doubt some will argue about the starting and ending dates of the various periods and yes, the Eqyptian, Greek and Roman periods overlap, but the intent of the graph aims to show an approximate relationship through time. The scale of scientific advancements show no numbers because we have no numbers to go by. The graph shows a relative scale of scientific advancement compared to other periods. Historians, for example, would agree that the Romans in the first few centuries CE had more knowlege about nature (science) than the Greeks of 400 BCE, and that the Age of Enlightenment built on the scientifc discoveries made during the Renaissance. Feel free to adjust the scale to your liking, but regarless of how you adjust the graph, it will do little to change the fact that scientific knowlenge (or the loss of it) fell dramatically during the Christian Dark Ages."

Besides there are a variety of ways you can measure scientific advancement (there are multiple metrics) -- and no matter which one you choose, you're going to see a similar progression.

Again, consider the video I posted earlier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oxTMUTOz0w

OHN: Actually you can measure technological advancement with quite a few economic calculations. The idea is to get a feel for labor efficiency, cost reductions, output differentials, production possibilities, the marginal product ratios between capital and labor, etc. GDP would also be a good rough estimate of how active your economy is, where you can correlate between economic activity and the increase of scientific and technological efficiency (as it includes consumption, investment, government spending, and net exports). With scientific advancement we see improvements in almost every field you care to name, and so there's lots to measure.

In other words, quibbling over the lack of units on that chart earlier is just completely missing the point. Yeah, it's not a great chart due to its ambiguity, but that doesn't make its message false or somehow less valid.
