A few ideas to fix the deficit:

*Stop balancing the budget with money you don't have.
*Surpluses in a budget could go towards paying off the deficit.
*Legalize prostitution. Not only would it create jobs, but the salary drawn by those in the profession would be taxable income.
*Cut defense spending. (Though I'll never be brave enough to actually voice this opinion out in public.)

It's really not that hard in principle. The problem comes in when you get 400-odd senile middle-aged guys into one room and tell them to agree that these fundamental ideas are good ones.
