Any of you guys into phone modding?
I currently own a Nexus One model (rooted) and I've got it completely decked out:
About Screen: http://i.imgur.com/xgC5N.png In other words, it's a custom CyanogenMod7 (latest build plus some additional goodies baked in) with the Redstar OC 1152 kernel, and the Honeybread theme. I also have the LCD Density changed from 240 to 200 so it looks a bit sharper: Main Screen: http://i.imgur.com/L9fvE.png Random Menu Screen (Sound): http://i.imgur.com/KmXtk.png I mod my phone not with the intention of overclocking to its fullest extent, but to accomplish the following: 1. Better battery life than stock 2. Better performance than stock 3. Better appearance than stock 4. More options than stock And it also tears apart those silly iPhones. XD Anyone else here into modding and care to share? |

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
I've never owned a smartphone... or any phone since the one I got in 10th grade surprisingly since I'm on my laptop most of the time. I've seen some people mod their iphones and whatnot, but honestly nothing interested me in getting a new phone. What do you like about em? I might be getting a new one soon.

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
I have an HTC Incredible and I'm constantly changing my phone's look/launcher and such, but I have a semi-recent screenshot of a couple of my screens.
- dull screenshots from a bad screenshot app =P That was using the ADW launcher and BuuF theme/customizable icons. I think it's a fun look. Nothing too special in the functionality, but it's definitely not a battery life sucker. With a rooted phone you can do pretty much anything, so there's always room to experiment. I have apps which help regulate every little action running on my phone so battery life hasn't ever really been an issue. Now that you mention it, I wanna look into LCD density..

I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, rooted, overclocked to 1.6ghz, undervolting at idle, HSPA 3.5G enabled, Android 2.2.
Same reasons as you, better battery life, faster phone. Does indeed run circles around any iPhone. |

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
Well I use my phone as much more than just a talk/text machine. I'm constantly using it for business matters, remoting into work/home computers, using it as a wifi hotspot for my laptop when I'm not home, navigation, camera, etc. Current powerful smartphones enable you to do so much more than just call and text people, especially when it comes to people who are already technologically savvy and know how to get the most out of the device.

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
Yeah the wifi hotspot stuff is great -- I use it all the time, personally.
However, I am not currently remoting much. What do you use for this? I figure I'd have to static-IP myself and portforward etc? EDIT: 1.6 GHz is also impressive. What's the battery life like when you're actively using it at that frequency? Last edited by Reincarnate; 05-17-2011 at 02:36 PM.. |

I'm trying to figure out which Android phone is best right now. Any suggestions? I'm looking to buy it for my bday.

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
I always plan on messing around with any device I get. This would actually be my first cell, cause I never really needed one, but I KNOW that I want an android, and I know that I don't want it to be slow. I have an iPod touch 2nd gen and it's friggen slow. I've always jailbroken my iPod. I used it as a remote for my laptop, among other things. I also plan on making my own apps for it, I'm a CS student and I know Java. The two I've been looking at are the Incredible S and Nexus One and I'm not too sure what's best.

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
For RDP I use "2X" which is free from the market. If you're on a direct connection, then you just need your computer's ip address, if you're behind a router then yeah you need to forward a port.
When the OC is active, battery life goes down pretty hard, pretty much 1%/min. When it's undervolting and idle though, it more than makes up for it. If I use my phone lightly, then the battery can push 2.5 days or so. |

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
There are a couple new phones worth considering, but I'd wait it out another month, as June is going to be a big month for phones.

Also lol, the 1%/minute thing reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BnLbv6QYcA&t=2m0s Does anything technically receive much performance boost from the 1.6 Ghz threshold? I can OC my desktop computer, for instance, up through the 4.0 Ghz range but I find that nothing really takes advantage of it. Last edited by Reincarnate; 05-17-2011 at 03:04 PM.. |

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
The biggest notable difference between the stock 1ghz and 1.6ghz is the extreme responsiveness switching between screens and applications. No lag time, no waiting. If you tend to multi-task around a lot, it's almost a necessity. Plus I have a second battery that I keep in my car just in case.
Applications on phones aren't usually all too intensive, and probably won't take advantage of the speed increase aside from being a tad bit snappier. Plus, keep in mind that the 1%/min rate is when the phone is at high load, so having a game running, navigation, watching youtube, and wifi hotspot all at once. Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
Yeah that is my number one complaint about the stock phones. I dislike the lag that comes with switching between screens, especially if I have a live wallpaper running. Overclocking seems to kill this pretty well, but I don't notice much boost in the apps themselves. This isn't a big deal to me, however.

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
For ultimate customizability you should check out: http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/
It runs off GNU/Linux, and feels like it. Easy access to a terminal and everything and can do ANYTHING a GNU/Linux system can do. It's actually based off Debian. You can install Apache2 on it and turn into a web server. It's also all open source so you can modify the source code itself and compile it and build the system again. |

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
I own a Samsung Galaxy Indulge, and I was just thinking about rooting my phone, but then I realized I have no idea how to do that myself. Anyone care to tell me how? >_>
(oh cool, Rubix uses Dolphin too)

Re: Any of you guys into phone modding?
I have a Moto Droid 1. Currently using Liquid Gingerbread Mod. It's really good and helps my battery life. Lots of great settings. I don't overclock though because I'm scared of overheating.
