Default Re: Light Chancellors Pack 3 -The Finale- (Released)

Some reviews. I'm skipping around a bit because I don't have any headphones yet. It's harder to hear the songs. Favorites are bolded.

A Castle Under Siege - I love Norrin Radd. Hard file. By the way is Dentrimentalist Roar or a new author all together? Solid file but its layering could of been made cleaner. Very fun play. 7/10

A Shadow in a Blue Sky - I felt like there was way too many difficulty spikes all over this. The song itself is fantastic though. Fun as well but I can't see any replay value. 6/10

ALL MY TURN - Very hard but its expected from Roar. Cool file though with a lot of replay value. The generic straightforward approach to files may not be the most original thing but it plays great with IIDX songs in my opinion. 8/10

Burning Halloween Town - I enjoyed this a lot. I played heavy, it flowed well mostly. Felt a little bunched up at parts but it was still fun. 7/10

Car Sax - Definitely one of moches' unique files. It played in a weird way but it flowed very well. Reminded me a little of Stargroup's Jungle. Good MA file. 8.5/10

Confidence in the DOMINATION - Played this a while ago. Its somewhere on my Stepmania actually. It's a smooth file though (yes, smooth). Another good MA file but not as replayable in my opinion. 7.5/10

Digital Love - Wow, I had my doubts playing this. Trogdor, you've improved a lot from what I remember. This file was very, very fun and had a good amount of replay value. Layered well and the colored notes were fun to hit. 9/10

Ferris Wheel - Another simple but effective MA file. It's fun too and layered very nice and clean. 8/10

Finders Keepers - This was cool and flowed pretty cool. Steady difficulty throughout and maintained a fun factor that made the file stay fun and never get too hard where it was out of the difficulty range it started with. 8.5/10

GALAXY FOREST 11.6&12 - Definitely one of the strangest songs I've ever listened to. This was fun too. Not much to say from me really but it's definitely something I'd play again for the MA. 7.5/10

Hero - I felt making the notes green for the vocals was a little unnecessary in this file but it does make it feel different. Good file, I liked this a lot too because of the simplicity from Kommisar to the change in the colored notes in GD. It's different. I played heavy by the way. 9/10

I Love(Orange Things) - So glad to see a restep for this song. It was one of my favorite files to play in the older packs. The restep was much, much better than the original and plays much better. Very fun and something I'd play again. 8.5/10

Love Is Orange - I've mentioned this on KBO already. It plays similar to Toph's file but not entirely. It is fun though. 7.5/10

MARIA&JOKER - A very nice file that had nice freezes in it with some mine usage. I liked it a lot actually. 8/10

Miles - Lives up to what I've seen about it in the thread in my opinion. It has the same stepping style Puppet generally does, I won't get into details but thats a good thing. 9/10

Never Fade Away - IIDX file again. It's cool though. Not exactly the type of file I was expecting from the song choice but fun. 7.5/10

Rainbow Tylenol - So much fun too. Not the type of song choice I was expecting from Baq but it was overall nothing wrong with it from what I played. 8/10

Scott Pilgrim's Theme - Felt generic but in the bad way. It was fun for the first playthrough but I see nothing else about it that stuck out. The song is very catchy though. 6/10

Snow Fox - Eh, felt really pushed together. I liked the song as well. The layering felt so tight and it wasn't very fun to play. 6/10

Whatever I skipped over I'll come back to later in a new post probably. Overall an enjoyable and pack worth saving onto Stepmania so far.

Default Re: Light Chancellors Pack 3 -The Finale- (Released)

I didn't get the chance to play a lot of it - schoolwork caught me offguard. I will say this though:

t-rog-dor: you're the ****ing man. First, I see your Innocence file from way back when and fall in love with it. Then, you bring out Autumn Insomnia Session -- file is just downright gorgeous and is incredibly fun. Also, gotta say that I really liked Car Sax (despite other people's reviews). I was somewhat disappointed with a few files in the beginning of the pack that I ran into...partial reviews:
------------------

A Castle Under Siege: not a fan. Patterns were very choppy and forced in spots that didn't need to be. File did get better as time passed, though. 5/10

A Shadow in the Blue Sky: I don't care if the whole blue note syndrome is supposed to be "artistic", it's mis-quantized in my eyes. Chart had some really awkward layering, and the accents were strange; it didn't capture the music very well (at least to me). 4/10

Aha!: Pretty abusive freeze usage. However, it's an interesting step from the normal, monotonous stepping style that has the same mechanical layering throughout the file. There's some very close attention to vocal sustains in the freezes and I can definitely appreciate that. File flows really roughly, but it looks like it's intended to do so. 6/10

All My Turn: Direct layering; typical of Roar. Why open with a 32nd run but never use it again when the snare rushes happen? File is extremely rough in flow for the last third of the song. 4/10

Autumn Insomnia Session: Wow. This file is phenomenal; coupled with the song, it portrays the intensities beautifully. The forced staccato taps are very well thought of, and the chart flows very smoothly during the calm parts, and very blocky in the intense drum fills, allowing for a great MA file that has awesome speed flourishes and technical rhythms. 10/10 - absolutely incredible and a file that I will definitely play again and again.

Ax and Shield:
Heavy -- this chart is just way overdone. Direct layering and really nothing to offer. 3/10
Standard -- despite the decent drop in difficulty, I actually rather enjoyed this chart. It's not perfect in layering, but it's very clear to the player what's being focused on, and there are some nice accents in here in comparison to the heavy counterpart. It dragged on for a little bit, but not enough to bother. 8/10

Burning Halloween: The snare rolls leading to each individual section felt really over-layered; however, the sections outside of these aren't too bad. Song was very repetitive. 5/10

Cansei de S NIK: eh. I could see a different chart for this but what you have isn't bad either. Not great, but not bad. 6/10

Capital City of Flowers in the Sky: A few PR issues that I personally think could be resolved, but other than that, this chart is pretty nice. 8/10

Car Sax: Really fun. Some pretty wacky patterns, but I do like the layering distribution throughout the chart. 9/10

I wanted to finish this a long time ago but never got around to. Still incomplete but w/e I'll post what I have. Its probably too late to post this as its more of "what the file is" rather than a proper review but oh well lol
By a guy who barely plays 4k
[] refers to chart nps rating

--------------------------------------------------

A Castle Under Siege (Detrimentalist) [11]
-The entire file follows a bursty 32nd theme with some jumpstream, makes it pretty fun and scorable. Consistently dense and it keeps your momentum going so you won't really lose focus when playing the file. Great file to start off the pack

A Shadow in the Blue Sky (HST) [9]
-I think I played this before as a single release lmao. Minijacky; will keep you focused throughout the file. Some jumpjacks later on in the file but its not too hard IMO. As a whole plays pretty nicely as an oldschoolish file (?)

Aha! (Vospi) [7]
-Really...weird file. Liberal use of freezes and 8th jacks (occasionally at the same time), be careful of end-to-end connected freezes. Unique enough that I'd play through again

All My Turn (Roar176) [10]
-A scoring file, not uncommon to be seen from Roar. Some minijacks, and 24th/32nds are tricky but gives it scoring factor and will probably be replayed again and again

Autumn Insomnia Session (Rogdor) [10]
-A very colourful file. The first half of the file is not too hard, the second half however gets relentless with (slow) 32nds and some 24th minijacks; gives a good scoring challenge. Pretty chill song

Ax and Shield
-(Gundam-Dude) [8] Distinctly GD file from pattern choice and colourexpressed freezes (I guess?). The song starts out moderately paced and then switchs to high gear on the later part of the song, which fortunately isn't layered very densely in the file and is fun to play
-(Leonid) [12] The harder scoringfile counterpart to GD's. Starts off immediately with a 48th burst which made me restart the file a few times just to nail right lol. Some parts of the file has a distinct onehand8thjacks-otherhand12thjacks which I thought was a novel concept (though apparently leonid said its taken from the BMS). 2nd half is a rush of awkward polyrhythms and jumpjacks/jacks which makes it pretty hard

Burning Halloween Town (Scylaax) [9]
-I normally find Scylaax files decently challenging; dense bursts of jumpjack/stream with a little twist of coloured notes (and has his mine usage too). Slightly inconsistent in difficulty throughout the file IMO but its not significant, definitely replayable

Cansei de S NIK (Roar176) [7]
-Is it just me or does this feel different than what Roar normally makes? Some relatively slow jacks and bursts in the file, might boost up the difficulty rating to compensate? I like the mine gimmicks in this haha. TBH I was kinda turned away by the start of the song but as I played on the file got more involved and fun

Capital City of Flowers in The Sky ~ Bridge of The Lotus (Ophi) [8]

-At this BPM(low) its pretty fun to hit jacks. Unfortunately for that the file felt fairly stagnant and a little bland for the most part, but its more accessible to less experience players (brushing aside the jacks). Gets much better when the guitar solo comes in (but of course!), which doesn't last too long though. Loved that one particular drumburst pattern about 2/3 into the file

Car Sax (moches) [6]
-This sounds totally like something you'd step lmao. Pretty streamy/flowy file IMO, with some coloured notes and mines not atypical of moches. Short and sweet

Chrometaphor (Leonid) [7]
-Pretty amazing ambient song. It's one of those files that grows on you after playing it a couple of times. Gotta give hats off to you for stepping this, theres not too much you can do (very little jumps/chords in this file) but IMO the mines were great and expressed the song well, giving it enough variation that I'd play it again. I like this

Confidence in the DOMINATION (Puppet) [9]
-Short file, but slightly repetitive. Very liberal use of mini/jacks, be warned! Pretty tough at least to me, seems like a scoring file

Dark Cave (moches) [9]
-The distinctive thing of this file is the abundant minijacks use and 32nds. They work pretty well; I didn't have problems hitting them. I would whore this for a better score

Demystify Feast -Speedy Devil- (Kommisar) [10]

-Somehow Kommi files have this thing of having some copy pasted patterns but which are awesome to hit. Minijacks and 32nd rolls, overall well put together and very replayable

Digital Love (Rogdor) [8]
-Short and sweet. Most of the file/song consists of the elec guitar solo which gives it its fun/difficulty factor. Be wary of notes right after freezes (they are still my personal pet peeve oop). Has that Rog feel to the file

Donations Please (Gundam-Dude) [11]
-Not the kinda song you'd normally see GD step; personally my fav file from him in this pack. Smooth flowing patterns makes this pretty easy for an 11, mostly minifreezes and mines with some bursts

El Dorado (Trance-Core) [9]
-I personally thought layering was somewhat weird but file works. Some patterns were pretty fun and cool to hit, I personally played the file a 2nd time before I finish typing this sentence lol

Epsilon-Delta (Melonid; Melon/Leonid collab) [11]
-Overall a JSish scoring file with freezes. Jumptrills and patterns were fun to hit, in fact they felt a tad bit on the easy side for an 11. It gets harder on the 2nd half of the file with some jumpjacks and 5 note long jacks, but shouldn't be too big a problem if you know its coming

Ergosphere (Jimerax) [9]
-Some people prefer kn33grow's file of this song. I personally thought its a nice variation; its always interesting to see how two people would step the same song differently. Colourfully tricky file due to the jazzyness, I personally can't MA it to save my life rofl

Ferris Wheel (Don) [7]

-Kinda colourful from some colourtheory and polys, I love it. Simple and sweet, clean presentation with a fairly low bpm (and its Dormir .!)

Finders Keepers (Rebound) [9]
-This was really cool to play. Good steppable song, neat patterns, clean presentation. Will definitely replay this

Flaxen Necklace (Scylaax) [9]

-Wow. Probably my fav Scylaax file from this pack, densely layered and feels awesome to hit. Minijacky with violin freezes worked out very well IMO

Futuristic Imagination (Gundam-Dude) [7]
-Very easy to hit patterns and to MA, keeps it pretty fun at this difficulty level

Galaxy Forest 11.6&12 (Trance-Core) [8]

-Fast orchestral music+stream makes it a very polyrhythmic coloured file, everything comes in bursts

Hatsune Miku no Tomadoi (Kommisar/Kory collab) [10]

-I am a little biased cause I hate this song lol. That aside, fast 8ths/stream, minifreezes and mines with some trickly polyrhythms on the later half of the song

Hero (Kommisar/Gundam-Dude collab) [10]

-Outsider rapping tends to make interesting colourful MA files lol. Pretty tricky to time properly and gets a little fast and bursty near the ending, but otherwise managable and really fun. I personally have problems hitting a particular mine section halfway through the song

Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite
-(Don) [8] That banner hnng ): Simpler less layered version of HST's. Clean, and straightforward to play
-(HST) [9] Slightly harder version of Don's file, more layered and some minijacks but they are fun.
I love both files, very fun patterns to hit. I see myself playing these files quite alot (although I'm personally biased towards Don's file cause of how clean the presentation is)

Macuilxochitl (Leonid) [9]

-Cool song. Straightforward for the most part, piano streamy with layered jumps/chords. Mines keep you on your toes and are well placed in pauses of the stream

Radiant (Gundam-Dude) [8]
-Gundam-Dude loves Tsukasa. Slightly messier than GD's typical file IMO, but still playable and tries to be expressive. Kinda varied patterns throughout

T&J (Leonid) [13]
-Fairly hard file, with high bpm 8ths, jumpjacks and fast rainbow trills. Some polyrhythmic patterns makes it much trickier too

Umbral Ultimatum (Detrimentalist) [10]
-I saw a vid preview of this song awhile back and that alone gave me the urge to play this. File is much harder than it looks rofl, pretty tricky bursts and js at a decently fast bpm. Has gaps in between which lets you catch your breath. Overall this is an amazing file

Vanished Truth (Gundam-Dude made both 4k files, Detrimentalist made the solo file)
-[10] Trilly file, be aware of one long trill at high bpm! Pretty organised patterns which are cool to hit, typical of GD files
-[13] A more densely BS layered version of the easier chart, with minijacks formed in transitions etc. Makes it quite a scoring challenge

Oh sorry Dentri lol I couldn't figure it out since everyone is making new aliases lately for newer packs and for some reason I was beginning to think that. Glad to see a new stepper I haven't been completely in tune with the community lately so that's probably why I didn't know you've been here.
