When 1.5 wasn't cutting it for anymore, I took a massive SM break to work on speed and reading and started out with a really low Cmod (I believe it was C500 iirc). Then, with every subsequent SM session I had, I'd raise the speed mod by 10, eventually peaking at C700. Came back to FFR, started playing on 1.75 and higher (currently switching between 1.9 and 2.0 depending on note density of the song I'm playing), and noticed I'd gotten much better.

Try something similar on FFR. Play 1.4 during your next FFR sesh, wait a while, play again and then increase your speed mod to 1.425. Quarter of a tenth increments should make the transition feel more natural as you might not even notice you're playing at a faster speed mod until you reach, say, 1.6, and then directly compare it to where you started.

I suppose it all depends on who you are, but I personally use a desktop PC, while also having a Dell ps2 keyboard. I find that most desktops are a lot easier to play on and tend to have less lag for me in comparison (although I haven't used any top of the line laptops so I suppose this doesn't matter much). Although with all laptop keyboards I have dealt with, as well as most USB keyboards, a lot of my crazy key presses will get dropped...which sucks. The dell ps2 I have seems not to drop a single key no matter how fast I hit patterns, or just flat out mash things.

As well, having a keyboard that is not directly attached to the computer itself gives you the ability to freely move it around wherever you want it for more a more comfortable position while you play. This can make it a lot easier to get in a better position, and not feel cramped and whatever else. In fact, a lot of people who play FFR on a laptop use an external keyboard so they can do this, or just because the laptop keyboard itself isn't a very good one to play on.

1.9x speedmod, QWOP key setting, laptop.

Because of others watching me, I've influenced others to up their speed mods too [krunky moved his to 1.9 after me and Panic4Me moved hers to 1.75 when I played on it two years ago].

If you're thinking of upping your speed mod, do it a little at a time. You don't want to shock your eyes into an immediate jump.

As far as the different keyboards go, I used to play on 2 different desktop keyboards, and the one I liked more was a flatter one. My laptop works the best though because, in my opinion, it's easier to hit these keys as opposed to my old desktop keyboards. Also a little bit easier to jack too.

^ Pretty much this.

When I tried going from arrow keys to ASKL, I noticed that my right index finger had a tendency to drift upwards to the I key. This made sense once I realized that it was muscle memory of the finger being a little higher to hit what it thought was the up arrow key after playing that way for something like 5 years.

The smallest setup change can have a huge impact on your speed and accuracy, even if you can read a file perfectly fine. Above all, find a position and speed that's comfortable for you and stick to it. Macgravel won fame some time ago for playing one-handed on 1x and getting very good scores, so it's really a matter of how much time and effort you want to spend mastering a certain setup.

i dont really think its the keys that screw me up, i think its more being used to my hands being so close together. i played one hand when i first started, moved to two hands on the arrows, then went to index, and thats when i was actually good at this LOL, then i went back to two hands but i moved over to the CVBN setup and i havent changed since. i guess im still trying to find what suits me and honestly i think im going to try and go back to index, because thats what really made me half way decent at this game.
