What's very sad to me is that so many people have so much potential for a better life and are completely unaware of how close they are with just a little more effort.
I might start a thread on this. Last edited by Reincarnate; 12-28-2010 at 09:18 AM.. |

Majoring in English is a massive mistake, especially if you're paying for it.

UMBC University Maryland - College Park Virginia Tech James Madison University University of Delaware Howard Community College The only way I'd wanna go to Community is if i couldn't get into my other choice schools financially or if I'd be easier to get into my choice school through transfer from HCC to one of my Maryland choices. I know the credits should be able to trasnfer.

Applying doesn't make someone smart.
<--- Getting in does ![]() Although to be fair, OHN has killer stats. Top schools get more and more selective with each year... it's disgusting. Some schools are starting to dip further and further down into sub-10% admission rates. You not only need killer stats, but you need something to make you stand out, too. It's a pretty agonizing (but formulaic) process. Last edited by Reincarnate; 12-28-2010 at 10:09 AM.. |

Almost every one of my fellow English grad friends had no job prospects upon graduation. Those that found jobs only got those jobs through connections/networking. Others went onto grad school and pursued something a bit more employable. You're better off choosing something a little more practical AND enriching, again, especially if you're paying for it. |

If you want, sure. Minors don't have much impact on employability in general. They're really more like "extra skills I have on the side," so if you want to minor in English, it's all good.

I applied for Cognitive + Computer Science for AI. haha.
CMU is like 2nd or 3rd backup. Also, I don't think it's really fair to judge what someone majors in if it's what they're interested in. Although choosing something such as 'The Classics' would be much more beneficial then a broad English degree..

You'll probably get in everywhere but Penn and Stanford with a decent chance for Cornell.
