Default How do I fix a laggy iPod?

I've done some researching on this issue... and honestly, I've found out that this has been an issue since 2008. So surely they've found a fix for this? I have an 80 GB iPod Classic, and it's really slow in terms of navigation... which is essentially why people buy iPods, right? For hassle free navigating?

Anyways..

My brother's iPod has less space left than my iPod and we both have the same exact type of iPod, except his is faster. There's no delay whatsoever... but my iPod is ridiculously slow.

Has Apple released a fix for this issue? If so can someone direct me to it? Or explain to me how to fix this issue. It's really annoying and I've been ignoring it for far too long now.

Could have anything to do with the fact that I have been refraining from updating iTunes for a long time?

My iPod is tremendously slow and it's really beginning to aggravate me. The reason I'm so fed up with how slow it's going is because I have an 80 GB iPod... and I only have 3100 songs on it which takes up about 19 GB or so.. So I have about 60 GB of space left on my 80 GB iPod... yet it goes super slow

Does anyone know the reason behind why it's going so slow? Has anyone else had issues with lagging iPods? Is there anything I can do to make it go as fast as when I first got it? I understand that the more you put on it, the slower it goes. But.. I've only filled up about 25% of it, there's no way it should be going this slow. I only have music on it, no movies, no pictures, none of that extra stuff.

Someone help?

tl;dr - my 80GB iPod has 60 GB of space left, but is lagging and responding really slowly.. how do I fix this?

Defrag it using Auslogics.

Does turning it off actually make it restart its mini OS? If not then let the battery die and recharge it.

Defragging isn't really going to do anything if it's lagging during navigation as the OS data doesn't really get moved around and therefore not fragmented. I think the OS is on another partition or stored somewhere else on the iPod all-together so that would make it even more pointless. I'd fully update your firmware and iTunes and if that fails "wipe it". I don't know how this is done on iPods but it sounds like the issue you're having is a software one.

This is kind of a longshot, but it is possible the tiny amount of cpu thermal paste is degrading causing your cpu to overheat more than it should. There isn't really any way to fix that though.

Thanks for the helpful answers, guys. :P

I just started letting my iPod play. I'm gonna wait for it to run out of battery then fully recharge it. In the meanwhile, does anyone know where I'd go in order to update the firmware?

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1320

This might be a faster method to restart the OS instead of draining the battery.

For an Ipod nano

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button simultaneously for at least eight seconds or until the Apple logo appears. You may need to repeat this step.

If the above step did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.
There were tons of different types that all had different ways to reset.

Wow, Izzy. I followed the method for restarting iPod Classic iPods from the link you provided and there is virtually no lag/delay now. You're a life saver!

Appreciate the help from everyone else as well!
