that engine was gonna be up on DF after some graphics changes, haha. That's why Velocity has a special coder group all to himself on DF.

Yeah, again, a lot of "active improvement" involves looking at what causes you difficulty and simply resolving that difficulty by trying other approaches to your playstyle.

It's an really simple concept that so few players leverage, but it really helps you improve much more quickly than "let's just play this file a billion times with the same approach and hope the approach eventually starts to work."

Not at the moment, but I can get them later if you want. Someone else on this forum also mentioned they had the files handy.

I might just use it to train my hands to handle those jacks better - I mean, my Death Piano score has a decent rank, but the PA is far worse than I want it to be.

But how does one work on speed? I've tried changing keys, playing only fast songs for hours on end, changing my hand position but nothing. I can read most files perfectly clear but my fingers fail to keep up

I switched my key setup from askl to qsko and it's working wonders. I think I can do significantly better than this

Here's the thing about speed, imo. Everyone's capable of speed. There's nothing about, say, Dossar's hands that are better than yours (other than, potentially, nerve myelin). The problem is that some positions are more conducive to speed than others. If you record what your hands are doing during fast/difficult sections, I guarantee you'll be embarrassed. Watch people on YT doing difficult songs well and you'll notice they aren't flailing around wildly -- but are usually calm, collected, and mechanical.

An analogy might be Max 300 on foot. Most people when they start out usually hit their feet hard, flail their legs around retardedly, clutch the bar for dear life, gasp for air, and still suck. Watch the pros today and they all basically yawn their way through the song, barely moving or breaking a sweat, and eventually pump out a near-AAA or AAA without much effort. It's all in the way you play.

Years ago, most people played Stepmania/DWI/etc using the standard arrow keys (watch almost any old video from the early 2000's) and basically sucked until they decided to evolve to spread-play, which partially solved the hand-bunching problem at the expense of being unable to index more difficult sections (such as one-handed trills or a jack that you could normally use a dominant finger for).

We all develop habits in terms of muscle memory that are difficult to overcome. At the end of the day, if you find you're still not as fast as you'd like, you need to look for where you're wasting unnecessary movements. Recording hands is a good way to see what's going on. You'll usually notice you lock into a weird, awkward angle or you're arching wildly or tapping way too hard/broadly for something that doesn't call for it. It *is* a positioning issue -- it's just a tricky one to solve sometimes.

And that's why my setup is sdef/4286. When I moved from 3-finger to spread I was still able to hit the spread-difficult patterns by quickly switching to 3-finger or index or what-have-you just to hit them. In particular, faster running-men (I'm thinking Hellhounds here) are much easier to PA when one doesn't rely solely on spread.
