It's not worthless. YOu had all that time with much better gear to progress further and get yet better gear. That means you should be able to get through the new 10 and 25 normal and heroic raids faster than the people who still need to go and get that gear that you already earned, keeping you just as ahead of them as you were before.

I know, it's just sort of a slap in the face at first, despite that that's always how the game has been.
