Default Cartoon or Anime?

Is dragon ball z/gt a cartoon or anime? Yeah there's a bunch of other cartoons/animes I'd wonder if you people think they're cartoons or anime...

Ugh...

Its weird. Anime is similar to a rectangle (the shape). A rectangle can also be a classified as a square. Like how and Anime can be classified as a cartoon...but not the other way around.

So, there isnt really a point to asking if it is an anime or a cartoon since it can be either.

You got that backwards (I think) A square can be called a rectangle, but a rectangle can't be classified as a square.

Guys, anime doesn't specifically mean a Japanese cartoon. Anime, unless I'm mistaken, comes from a combination of East and West. "Anim" comes from Latin, I believe, and it means motion. "E" comes from Japanese, and it means picture. Because of this, anime doesn't mean "japanese cartoon," it is merely the japanese word for cartoon.

Therefore, if what I just said is correct, Family Guy is most definitely an anime.

EDIT: Cypher, I believe you're correct.

EDIT NUMBA 2:

That seems to at least somewhat support what I said. Also, I learned in Japanese class that "eiga" meant movie. Is this right, or would a better term be something like motion picture?

Actually, what I was getting at was that the japanese would refer to Family Guy as anime. And since anime is a Japanese word, that means that if the Japanese say it means "any cartoon" I don't think we should be like "no, it means Japanese cartoons."

The point is that "Anime" has become a term that Americans use to describe cartoon shows from Asia. Nobody would refer to Family Guy or the Simpsons as anime. We have a word for it here and we'll use it to differentiate the two.

It's like comparing red apples and green apples. Both are apples, they just come from somewhere else than each other.

Yes, Eiga is the correct term for movie (or motion picture if you live int the 1930s).

And I always get the "sqaure rectangle" comparison mixed up. Really, I dont care, as long as my point came across.

Conventionally, Anime refers to any series animated in the japanese style (notorious for big eyes, funny hair, exaggerated emotions). It is referred to as Anime in japanese because it comes from the english "animation", through common use by the hardcore fans it became the standard word to refer to animated works in Japanese.

We English speakers borrow the word (taking it back, gogo language) to differentiate between western works and eastern works, so calling Family Guy anime is incorrect on all counts.

What does this mean? An Candadian art studio can produce an anime-inspired work, but it wont be called anime (in English). A korean studio can produce the same thing, but it will be referred to as anime due to not being western.

Exactly sotN.... It's basically east versus west... we classify their cartoons in a different catagory than we classify our own. They just simply have "Cartoons" seeing as they are less "racist" (wrong term, but it gets my point across) towards our cartoons.

Anime is the French word for Cartoon. It is not Japanese. That is why there is an accent over the e (not shown here.)

Animé. That's how you type it truly. Nonetheless though, animé is just something to describe a specific genre of cartoons. Even then, using the word is still pretty large. I mean, you can break it down to realistic, cartoonish, chibi, etc etc etc. However, it was mostly put here:

Anime was just slang for "animated (video, cartoon, movie, series, etc)". It has no connotative meaning whatsoever by itself.

Both of you are wrong although Chard's definition is much closer than Halloween town's. Anime in French means animate.

EDIT: Hallow this is what your sentence was

"the Little Red Riding Hood etait animated joix"

Dragon Ball Z sux !!! It is NOT anime... Anime is drawn with high detail and definate style! DBZ is ugly and poorly done! it sux !!! I love anime, but DBZ is one of those shows that i cant stand! I admire anime for the extreme DETAIL which DBZ lacks in full. I say it again, it is not an anime, and is a crappy show anyways...

these are my opinions! plz dont take them personally!
