I will get Vista as soon as everythings worked out, until then I'm sticking to XP.
@NFD asking what does he have to do: You have to delete the system 32 folder

But there's really no point in Vista at this point since Microsoft operates on a 3-year operating system cycle. Vista came out in 2006, so another OS will be released in 2009. |

Take Squeek's advice and wait. Besides, Vista has its issues, and they've kept me from switching. And trust me, I could have switched.
Vista is problematic because you cannot write to your Program Files drive. So, you have to find a new place to install everything - which is fine, until you forget once and go along your merry way clicking "Next" on a program you're installing. Then you're screwed if the program writes ANYTHING to its own folder. Also, it's not compatible with a few things - Flash being one of them. Maybe if you have 11 GB of RAM it's not a problem, I dunno, but on the computer I played on, with 5 GB of RAM and a perfectly fine processor, I lagged like hell. If you cherish FFR, don't get Vista. |

I think I know what happened:
You downloaded a file (with a special win32 attacking bot), and it disguised itself as the safe download portion (depending on where you downloaded it, this virus, or bot, not really sure on the names these things... too lazy to check) of the file, and slowly it started accessing your files, and then, ultimately, reached your win32 and controlled your hard drive via the files, then deleted it as to say win32 can delete itself if it could think to do so. EDIT: It happened to me, and my desktop wouldn't show up since it manipulated my Win32 (as the warnings were saying I had before the take over) and I couldn't go anywhere past that... so I had to use a disc system recovery to get things back... and no back-up files... if you did, it's probably lingering somewhere among those files since it multiplies like bacteria. (unless you haven't had it long enough to take over all files and it already got removed) Last edited by ~kitty~; 12-19-2008 at 07:44 AM.. |

He said in the OP that he didn't download anything. Maybe something he got a while ago?
Otherwise, that can't be right. |

This is why you should save your stuff elsewhere. Maybe an external hard drive. That's what I do anyway, but yeah, that really sucks. Something similar happened to my friend when I was in 7th grade and we found out later that someone had hacked into his computer somehow and destroyed everything and then posted pictures of his sister (which were on the comp) all over the internet. >_>' I don't know the exact details, but we knew it didn't happen for no reason.

Windows 7 should be coming out within the next 2 years or so, so upgrading to Vista is pretty pointless. Windows 7 is confirmed to be an updated version of Vista, anyway.

I read a while ago that Windows 7 would be Vista, with less features, less built-in spyware, less built in pretty much everything.
I sure as hell hope that rumor is true.

That's what I heard. And then I almost died when my parents decided they wanted a new computer and that it would have Vista. Vista --> FFR Slayer. So I've heard from most everybody.
Grats on getting most everything back.

itt: sqks opinions
Use Media Player Classic. It's much better and free to dl. Also, yea, it's a really good idea to have an external. You can get a decent one for about $100 nowadays for idk, 300gb space.

No, Vista is not the problem, nor is the amount of RAM. You do not need 5gb or 11gb RAM to run a flash application, sorry. Go learn something about hardware before you give such advice. Quote:
XP was as bad as Vista when it came out. It takes time for an operating system that a good 90% of the world uses to get up to speed. Vista now operates much faster than before, and all the kinks have been worked out. I have been using this computer with Vista for months, and only once has it crashed due to a non-overclocking incident, and that was from an Apple program, iTunes 8. You know what the truth is? You've all been duped. Bloggers and columnists on the internet get paid by number of viewers because they make money from advertising. The quickest and most effective way to do that is to sensationalize and create conspiracy theories. So the blog vultures jumped on the Vista carcass. Translation: you were hyped up into believing a bunch of bull****. Vista is not bad. Vista is not the devil. Go learn something about hardware and then you'll realize it yourself. It's not exactly secret knowledge. Windows 7 will be based on the Windows Vista architecture. What that means is, Windows 7 is essentially Vista Number 2. There is nothing wrong with the Vista kernel, and in fact it's better and more stable than the XP kernel. But hey, I'm just a hardcore computer enthusiast who owns a custom computer building business and started programming C++ at age 14 and Visual Basic at age 12, and has dealt with many kinds of software and OSs personally and professionally. What the **** do I know? Windows 7 will be more scalable - that is, there will be smaller versions of the OS to allow it to be used in more applications than are currently possible. Meaning, if I want to run an OS from a thumb drive, I have a Windows alternative to DamnSmallLinux.

Well, I like WMP 11 because it looks nice. It says I need to download the Rollup v2, but can anybody provide a link? I can't find it.

Funny enough about factual sources, I've used Vista for three months on and off on a very good computer.
I definitely didn't like it, and I found that my much worse computer was faster. And NFD, don't switch to VISTA. Because if the computer is only Vista compatible than it's not going to run it very well at all.

Windows 7's name sounds horrible.
XP, Vista, then the number 7.
