Default The day LD's school got owned

So today, was just another day at Williamsville North High School. People were chattering in the halls, and people knew something was up.

6th mod rolls around, LD keeps looking at the clock, and it hits 12:00, and he chuckles.

at 12:20, our assistant pricipal comes on the PA, and says (very flustered) "We are expirencing technical difficulties. We need everyone to log off the computers, and no one may log on.".

So then more kids in my class laugh. at 12:25, 6th mod ends, and I franticly run to the library, to see what happened.

There was a virus (I already knew ) called winstart.exe, made by a student. This virus was designed to change the users desktop if they logged on between 12:00 and 1:00 today 1/4/05. The wallpaper was changed to an image of 2 girls making out, and a girl with no shirt on.

Administration was FURIOUS, it was so funny, and they were running around the school.

The best part was, unknown to us (we know the kid who wrote it) was that it had spread to other highschools!

The way it spread was simple. Every user has a logon, and an H: drive. The virus is put on the C: drive of one computer, and when you log on, it transfers to your H drive, then every other computer you go to, it copies to that C drive, and it keeps spreading.

The day after it was released (In december) it had infected every computer. Over winter break, IT deleted it from everyones H drive, and the C drives get cleaned on start up every day.

We think the virus survived on Laptops, which don't have "Deep Freeze" installed, and if a class uses them, it starts spreading again.

It only went of on about 15 computers, but EVERYONE saw.

The kid didn't go to school today, and rumors say he might get arrested.

hahah, that rocks!

I doubt he'll get arrested. Generally the worst you'll get is a few weeks suspension, and banning from the computers. My friend wrote a sweet program to evade the filters, and was suspended for a week and banned from the computers for the remainder of the year.

I wouldn't be suprised if he was arrested. People have been expelled from my school for *looking* at pictures like that, let alone spreading them.

Uhhh, we broke around the filters too, you would just get a 10 day suspension.

I don't think you know how sevear this is. He put pron on like every computer, it didn't get a chance to be shown on them it, but it was installed, and ready to hit.

He will be expelled AT THE LEAST

I think you guys are missing the point.

VIRUS.

That's big time arrest, there. Even though it didn't destroy any hardware, it was an executable, therefore named a virus.

Tis a funny story. Sucks for this kid though. His moment in fame is gonna get him in the prisons.

Not quite.

I have to say, it is pretty clever, but I am against f*cking with schools and administration. The virus probably cost the school district thousands of dollars.

Person part of the school district: Hmm, how are we going to fix this?
Another person part of the school district: Well we made 1000 dollars last fundraiser for updated textbooks...let's blow it on hiring a random guy to fix the computers!
Everyone: HELL YEAH!

Um, no.

The CSA's are "deinfecting" them, when all they have to do is restart the computers, and it's whiped from the C drive, and recursivly delete it from the H drives, and it's done.

I know you are joking, but that is really how school districts run. Well, at least in California.

And I didnt know that the virus was destroyed after the computer was turned off. That's good then. But it still probably cost the school district thousands of dollars...that or a cut in the Art Class' funds....
