Getting "in the zone"
I can't remember what G4 called it, but before their big awards show they talked about how you could get in the zone while playing video games and not think about it.
This was a while back, but I bring it up because earlier I was playing Half Life 2 (finally got it) and I kept zoning out and not realizing that I was playing a game. I was hitting the keys and moving around and I felt more like I was watching a movie, because it all became like instincts. This has happened to me while playing DDR before, only a bit different. There would be times where I'm thinking "holy crap, I can't get all those arrows" and I get them all and am not even thinking about which buttons to push. My questions is, have you guys ever gotten in the zone? If so, when has it happened, and what was it like? Perhaps with enough responses we can discover the secret to getting into the zone and we'll be able to control it for maximum gaming ability! O=

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright. And I write the blog for their website. Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O |

RE: Getting "in the zone"
Whenever I play SM, I get in the zone.
Also Halo 2. Hell, any game I play. I don't understand it either!

RE: Getting "in the zone"
Yea, it's strange, everything seems like its slow motion, and it's instinct, it's pretty cool.

RE: Getting "in the zone"
I got "in the zone" a couple days ago when I was playing Mr. Driller DS. I couldn't really explain it. I started off and I was aware of everything that was going on around me, but as I got to like 1000m I started doing really good with around 2 lives left. I could dodge blocks without even thinking about it, it was pretty cool. Then when I beat it, I sort of snapped back into reality.
I could never explain the feeling or how I got it. Mr. Driller isn't even that action-packed either. O.o

RE: Getting "in the zone"
Happens to me when I play DWI sometimes. I tend to get 'in the zone' when I'm more relaxed, as in like not exactly going for a good score. I don't even think about what arrows to hit first, my fingers just..hit them It's really weird when you actually think about it.

RE: Getting "in the zone"
I do that during short quick burst of 16ths in SM. I see them all coming and I'm like "oh shi that's a lot of arrows." Then my fingers just move super quick-like and I get them all. Then I'm like "wow I got em all." It's kinda like I have super fingers that are self-aware or something during times like that. Also, I can combo all out 8th runs without even paying attention, when I remember a time not too long ago when I had to concentrate super hard just to pass 8th runs in FFR. Anyway, I've been playing Super Smash Bros. lately, and I do it in that game too. I'll be jumping through the air getting like a 3 hit combo on them before I even land. And, I do all of this without even thinking.

RE: Re: RE: Getting "in the zone"
I'm hardly ever not 'in the zone' as you put it. The only time I'm not is when I first play a new game and still need to think about what I'm doing. But after I get the controls and general movement down, I don't think about what I'm doing at all.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Getting "in the zone"
I beat Stage J, it took me like 2 hours and like 100 tries, but I did it.
And, wow, I had 10 lives on 2000 and I barely beat it. Not to mentin the fact that I was Holinger-Z and could be hit once before dying. |

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Getting "in the zone"
I get to the end of Stage J and I miss one of those block 'elevators' and I have to restart. It gets annoying after the 50th time.
During missions, if I get lucky, one of the undergrounder things gives me a one-up. I end up running out of air alot, though. Anyway, back on topic, I used to get in the zone while I was playing Stepmania. Mainly because I liked the music and there was nothing to distract me. Now, my graphics card is messed up and I can't play stepmania anymore.

Anyways yeah...but it's not JUST games that this happens to me. Piano is another thing. If I've played the song a good couple of times, I can just sit there and not even think about it, and somehow manage to play it perfectly. It's weird :S
