The Guide to FFR Theory and Practice X. Contents X. Contents I. Two Ways to Play II. Hand Positioning III. Speed Play IV. Theory of Progress V. Theory of Effect VI. Closing Statement I. Two Ways To Play There are essentially two ways to play a game such as FFR. The first is that you can memorize each 'level' to maximize your perfect scores. The second is to actively read (watch) the arrows for quick and precise hitting without trying to remember the entire song. A lot of people use both of those methods, but the latter of course endures more suffering then the others. This is because a lot of new people use this method but don't find the success they want. A way to fix this is to increase your typing speed and your reading speed. Several programs online can help you with this by forcing you to read faster and faster. Eventually those speeds will stick, as will those with typing tutors. II. Hand Positioning There are two styles of play here. You can use one hand, or two hands. The first is generally used with the arrow keys since they are close in proximity and don't have keys right around them, this allows for quick hits that CAN land halfway off some keys. The other style is the two handed style. Some may use the keys "Z,X,>,?", or these keys "A,S,K,L" or a various of others. I prefer the first. The key thing to the keystrokes in FFR is to hit them as lightly as possible. The less you press, the sooner your finger can retreat from the key and hit another. III. Speed Play Changing the speeds of songs is a VERY important step during your practice. Some songs will stack so many arrows so close to each other, you either can't read it and hit the arrows based on that OR read it to memorize it! The solution is to turn up the speed. While it may be faster, you most likely will find it easier to spot the arrows. Try each speed setting the game has and find something that's comfortable for you for each song. Why each song? They play different. One level 8 song may be slow while the other may be extremely fast. Keep this in mind. IV. Theory of Progress The Theory of Progress is this: If you do not begin high level songs after a year of consistant and constant practice, you probably wont be on the top lists for a very long time. The reason for this is basic human adaptation. It -will- take some more time then others, and if it has taken that long to get to that level then you can make an educated guess that it will take some time longer. Many players can't get past this, and that causes an even longer time and a higher stress level about the game. Do yourself a favor and move past this issue as soon as you can, you'll find that you'll get better a lot faster without that mental block. V. Theory of Effect In many cases, playing FFR will inevitably increase your memory span and/or your reading speed and/or your typing speed. If you're not playing this game strictly for fun, it can be a great training tool for that database job or other similar jobs. So you're really not loosing much by taking some time to play eh? Or maybe some other uses. That really would make a good advertisement... VI. Closing Statement FFR is a fun and addicting game, but many people don't get the tips stated above. However small they may be, however common knowledge it may be perceived as, there are quite a few people who don't know anything posted here. This may make a good resource to other players, which is my reason for creating it. I hope you've enjoyed it and hope to find you reading my next, more advanced guide. ![]() |

Nice try and all... but as TRD said, we already have a very well made sticky for newbies about this stuff... and a lot of your information is missing pieces.

I was really trying to focus on the theory part, but it just didn't come out as I planned it to. While it's not 100% a repost, I will agree that 90% of this post IS in that sticky. Sorry about that. x.x
Feel free to remove/lock the post until I can figure out something more constructive. Last edited by stevenw9; 09-7-2008 at 04:26 PM.. |
