To me, I'm someone without a "new" console, although not even really. I bought a 360 purely for Rock Band. don't have any other games. Baring that (and the PS2 that is my girlfriends that I never play), I have 2 N64 consoles. I also have a Genesis and Sega CD as well as an original gameboy and 1 original purple gameboy color. i guess you can consider the n64 old nowadays, since it is 12 years old and there haven't been new games made for it in years. it's still my baby though. anyway... back on topic... hard games... hardest 2 games on the n64 that i have: Superman64. it's not a hard game, per se... but the fact that NOTHING works the way it is supposed to work makes this game one of the buggiest ever made on any system. i heard about it and had to buy it to see if it really was as bad as people were saying. And let me assure you... it is. F-1 World Grand Prix. maybe it's that i don't know nearly enough about the fine details of indycar/cart racing... but i spent hours trying to figure this game out. i read guides, i read anything i could find. i spent time in game tweaking stuff. and i'm pretty good at racing games... but this game makes no god damn sense. no matter what you do, the tiniest mistake will cost you seconds, and none of the computers make any mistakes. the scariest thought is that they made a sequel to this game. a hard n64 game that i mastered... Top Gear Rally. the slightest touch of your stick would send the car flying. i love this game and spent months perfecting it. i even held a few world records for a while. again, pretty crazy that this game spawned TWO sequels. Oldest hard games not mentioned... the one that really pops into my mind is the original teenage mutant ninja turtles game. battletoads was also insanely hard. the NES produced a TON of insanely hard games... likely because the lack of control over the character made things much much harder. either that, or they didn't have adequate beta testers back in the mid 80s to tell the devs, "hey... this **** is WAY TOO ****ING HARD!"

DMC4 is pretty bad too. But I will agree DMC3
MD mode is dam near impossible.or how about SM with playing the impossible songs thats damn hard to pass Oh and another hard game: Animal crossing :P getting to a billion bells is hard I will agree with you tass. S64 was so hard because of the bugs, and I own F-1 as well. It takes alot of practice. Starcraft64 computer was damn hard in the beginning. then the AI got stupid an hour into a map. Ninja Gaiden (xbox)
Ninja Gaiden 2 (360)* *note, I have yet to finish this game, but if it continues as the first one did then it is easily just as hard. |

I mean N64 wise I can remember Pilot Wings being difficult (to get all perfects on). Also, Diddy Kong Racing (if you are trying to unlock that damn clock). |

As much as I admit that Ninja Gaiden was difficult, I never really thought it was super difficult. I beat all difficulties on a faulty Xbox in under 10 days (in order to return it to the store and be within the 10 days return policy).
I mean I would agree that something like DMC3 on DMD mode is much harder than Ninja Gaiden on even the hardest difficulty. The original Ninja Gaiden for NES was awesome and I'd probably say that was harder. |

to me, hardest game revolves around the entire game being hard. not just 1 mode or 100%ing being insanely hard. that's why i mentioned the games i did.... whereas many of you are merely talking about 100%ing or doing something on the hardest difficulty, etc.
never played pilot wings. don't really know anything about it. Rogue Squadron was pretty rough to get all Golds on. I never actually did it. Got pretty close though and spent months playing it. All around a great game.

I don't think there is a "hardest game ever".
Certainly there are video games which are hard. And any difficulty in a game is relative to all the other games out there, past and present. If what is meant by "hardest game ever" is "hardest game to beat" then there are many games which tie with this, namely all video games which aren't possible to beat. Many of the old arcade games are this way/etc. Also many joke games are this way. If a game has been beaten without a single continue by anybody it is not the "hardest game ever". Also if it has been completed to 100% by anybody it is not the "hardest game ever" either. |

Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness
Without guides, this game is near impossible. this person obviously used a walkthrough. This level would normally take a few hours to figure out if not days.

Rushy... that's a pretty ignorant thing to say. Have you never seen a speedrun before? People spend months or years perfectly 1 game, talking to other masters of the game for small tips and tricks to shave seconds off their runs time. It's perfectly possible the recorder of that vid had played the game countless times previously and recorded a run after much practice. clearly it isn't his first time playing.
reminds me a bit of the new Prince of Persia games (by new, i mean the 3d ones like Sands of Time). You get into a room and have to figure out how to get to the next room. With bad guys, traps, mazes, puzzles, etc etc. not all that hard, sine you're limited in the stuff you can do pretty heavily. there are only so many areas with hand holds, etc etc. places to jump.

Was just about to mention that, but once you figure out the area in which you can't get hit, they're rather easy. It's just the harder modes themselves that get you.
Obscure text-based games. The ones where the commands are so strange that you'd either need to talk with someone who had gotten through it, or consult a walkthrough to get anywhere. |
