Attention all idiots

The dollar sign goes in front of the number.

Not 15$. $15.

I've been seeing it way too often these days. Knock it off.

Hilarity reaches new peaks here folks.

Also, Squeek - It's probably due to how people say it vocally. The phrase would be "I spent ten dollars". People naturally think that means "I spent 10$". Idiotic though I agree.

In Euros it's the other way round though, we write 15€ instead of €15. So when a European talks about dollars he's more likely to make that particular mistake

"When writing currency amounts the location of the sign varies by currency. Many currencies, especially in Latin America and the English-speaking world, place it before the amount (e.g., £50.00). The standardized European default placement, used in absence of a national standard, is that (€) is placed before the amount."

You guys are the exception, not the rule.

In any event, the dollar sign goes in front of the value, and the cent sign goes after the value. The end.

I'm not arguing about who's correct and who isn't, just asking you to be a little more forgiving for those used to a different standard

Squeek, I think it's funny that you would berate people who would do this, yet defend other technical errors as stylistic choices.

Would you be happy if I said "5 USD" instead of "5$"?

Why? I thought it was acceptable to put them either side of the quotation mark?

Not according to my teacher.

I was always taught punctuation goes inside the quotation marks whether it relates to the quote or not, so my teacher is not incorrect, he is just following very long-held rules.

You don't live in America. You don't know how it is.

It's like judgement/judgment. We just do things differently around here, and some idiots are uptight about maintaining American style even if it makes no sense. Really, why the hell should you drop the 'e' in "judge" when modifying it to the word "judgement"? That makes no sense at all. Firefox is even trying to tell me it's wrong.

That's why I use Squeekism.

Afro: If you really want to put it after the number, write the word "dollars". Done and done.

To be fair, Firefox's built-in dictionary is pretty limited. I've had it tell me certain words don't exist, for instance "macromanagement." Oddly enough, dictionary.com also says it doesn't exist, yet reference.com (the encyclopedia version of the same site) says it does.

Relambrien - The best way to start with finding a word is to use "define:" (without quotes) on Google.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...e+Search&meta=

Finds it for you. I've had very few words be found this way and I tend to use it more than dictionary.com now.

Also, Stretchy / Afro - I guess America is just stricter then. Personally I find myself gravitating towards putting it inside the quotation marks as I think it looks neater.

When the first word in a sentence is a username, should the name be capitalized? For example, which of the following would be correct?

1. stretchypanda is a mod.
2. Stretchypanda is a mod.

I would tend to capitalise the username, even if the actual username is lowercase. An easy way to avoid it would be to change the sentence around, something along the lines of "At FFR, stretchypanda is a moderator".

I was never completely sure about this, either. I just follow the normal grammar rules and capitalize the proper noun no matter what. Like, I would rather see my name writter "rzr" because I like the shape and look, but I still write it "Rzr."
