Default How can some people not like/listen to music?

This question has plagued me for quite some time, after coming across a handfull of people who do not listen to music AT ALL. It is somewhat mind-baffling to me, to see how people cannot listen to music, since I feel so strongly about music in my life (to the point that I will say that it keeps me sane). I created this post to hopefully get some opinions from other people; since the answer to the question is rather opinionated. I know that it's sort of trivial, but my curiosity has forced me to bring up this question.

about the only time i listen to music is when i'm driving. since, there isn't anything else to do in the car, i do that. or, sometimes at work. apart from that, i don't listen to music. i watch ESPN.

since its hard to both listen to music (i don't have a radio) and watch tv at the same time, and i'd rather watch tv... thats what i do. plus, almost no bands from the past 10 years interest me. yes i have alot of MP3s on my computer, but i still just find myself doing other things for background noise than music.

PS - Spook r0x0rs teh FFR r@d!0

Being without music is like being without food and water.

perhaps they have simply closed their minds off to the point where not even music can move or inspire them. yes, even pointless pop music has been known to move/inspire people. i dont know how.

I never really looked to music for inspiration or messages or anything but something euphonious to the ears. I never cared about music at all up until when I was sixteen. Then I fell in love with the bagpipes, and started searching out music that I think is cool. I could still EASILY do without music. It's not that I don't like music; that's a completely different argument. It's just never been that integral part of my life. It's nice and all, but it's just extra.

I never really noticed how important music has been in my life until recently (literally, less than 3 weeks ago).

And it has been important for the passed 7 years of my life. Until maybe 3 years ago, I was very close minded when it came to music (ska or punk). But then I stopped being a little bitch.

I can not understand how people can not listen to music. But maybe those people lack the functions of their right (or left) brain (I forgot which side of the brain is for music related stuff), and it just doesnt appeal to them...that's all I can really think of.

That or they are deaf.

Remember that thread where I ask if you would rather be Dear of Blind?

This is exactly why I made that thread.

I would definitely rather go blind then give up Frode Berge.

i think more kids listen to music during their teen "crisis" years. It- I dunno- helps them feel sorry for themselves when they are lying on their bed. (Not that that's a good thing).
Most kids find a style of music that they feel they can listen to while thinking or zoning out, like people who stare out of the window with their headphones.

I really don't listen to much. I hate almost every kind of music. But I do like some stuff which I listen to in the car.

I have a hard time concentrating on what I'm doing when I listen to music. My background in classical forces me to pick at the technicalities of almost any song I here. I guess I'm just a bad multi-tasker .

Listening to music is just like every other activity in life- the more you do it the more you grow dependent on it/the more taste you acquire for it. The same thing is most obvious in such tasks as watching football, playing sports, and even talking to other people.

I don't really listen to music just to get me through my "crisis years", i see it more of a relaxation and an outlet from the world. Everytime I have a project I listen to music. I set aside about 3 hours every night to just chill out and listen to some music. Last year I did a presentation on Music Therapy, and it was interesting how music could help as a pain killer and reduce stress. That is why I said before that I couldn't live without music; I would have broke down so many times mentally under the stress of life if I didn't like it so much. Lately i've been getting more into older music, around the time of vietnam.

I have somewhat come to the conclusion (based on what people have said) that people who say they don't listen to music doesn't mean they don't like it, they just don't listen to it regularly. It seems to have been the case for a few people, but that still doesn't explain one person i've met who absolutely hated music and passed it off as just noise.

Yeah, no excuse there; he's just crazy. He (she?) fails as a person. While lots of music is just noise to the selective ear, I'm sure there's something out there that could make him/her appreciate the beauty in music.

I could not live without music. I don't see how anyone could.

I basically have to listen to music during all waking hours or else I... I don't know.

I don't listen to it CONSTANTLY, but I really like it. I listen to my CD player every day, and often have WMP playing something.
