I've been rolling this around in my head for a while and I've been wondering if the type of music you listen to can have a significant impact on your view of world issues (politics, racism, etc.). I feel that the music thats had the largest impact on my views has to be the Dead Kennedys, after listening to them for a while I've been realizing how terrible racism/facisim is and also how filthy politics can be. (If you aren't familiar with the Dead Kennedys they are NOT an "Anarchy Punk" band like the Sex Pistols...The message they promote is to end racism, famine, unnecessary conflict, and to clean up politics and end corruption.) (Also, if you do hear some of their songs it would be good to know that many of their messages are delivered in a sarcastic manner, like the songs "I kill children" about the KKK killing black children and "Kill the Poor" about the dangers of advancing our weapons unnecessarily and that discrimination on the poor needs to end.)
A little quote I like: "OH YES ANARCHY IS SUCH A CONCIEVABLE FORM OF GOVERNMENT! THAT WAY THERE'S NO RULES AND EVERYTHING IS FREE AND WE CAN SMOKE POT AND LISTEN TO GOD SAVE THE QUEEN ALL DAY!" (sorry about the caps, it sounds right if said loud and sarcastically)

I hate political music like that. Music with rhetoric rather than lyrics makes me sick. That's the main reason I hate all the bands playing in the "Rock against Bush" concerts (even though I don't believe in their message, either). That and Christian music. I'm down with Christians and all, but I just can't stand Christian music. I also hate to see loyal band followers get politicked by their messages just beacause they listen to them.
So, in answer to your question, no, my music doesn't affect me because I don't let it. Can it? Probably not for me, but I'm sure that it could for the less interested (it's easy to adopt a view just because a band you like holds it if you've never had one in its place before). --Guido http://andy.mikee385.com |

Oh god...."Rock Against Bush"....that is some terrible stuff, musically and message-wise. I'm not a fan of Christian bands at all...trying to force your belief on someone just isn't cool, period. Also, my system of morals and beliefs isn't entirely composed of the opinions of these 4 people, the'd be ridiculous. But these are four sharp, intelligent people who's views I find interesting and I also agree with many of them, I've just adopted a few of their views because I strongly agree with them.

most of the music i listen to is non-lyrical, electronica and video game remixes, because i enjoy the artistic and emotional values that music can bring rather then the messages. so my music doesnt affect my opinions on world issues, but rather allows me to expand my creativity or remind me of that ecstatic feeling of playing a game i loved.

there is a lot of music out there (mostly underground hip hop) that makes me more aware of society around me and helps me understand their views on life. Listen to The Grouch, slug (from Atmosphere), and Sage Francis.

I've found, oddly enough, that a vast majority of mainstream music promotes stereotypes, self-delusion, and ignorance. I consider most vocal music useless, corrupted, or amusing twisted, but most non-vocal (no singers) or songs like country music are pleasant at most times and beneficial to hear. Classical music is my alcohol!

Not very many people realize it but, Rage Against the Machine was totally about world issues, also System of a Down is too. That is the kind of music i listen to, I wish I could have some other people around here listen to it... (they all listen to country music, some has some stuff in it I dont think it should have.) To answer your question, no, music does not affect me on my views although some other people live solely by what the music he/she listens to says.

On the point of music affecting my views; lyrics might change my views in some things, but otherwise music can only re-enforce what i already think. It all depends, but I'm the kind of person that will take in everything to get all points of view. For the most part it can only affect my views in minor ways, unless it sheds light on certain topics (Tupac's 2pacalypse or Immortal Technique do this). |

Don't get me started on why anarchy is good. Just read a few books on economics and you'll figure it out. And if you think Christian rock is forcing beliefs, I think you should listen to it and find out. It's not forcing anything. It's worship. These are people worshipping God using their God-given talents. If it was forcing someone to believe, there would be violence involved.
I listen to all sorts of music, rhetoric or not. You just have to remember that it is rhetoric, and that because it's their opinion doesn't mean it has to be yours. Keep your mind open, of course, but keep in mind that you don't have to believe everything your idol does. As long as it starts the listener to think critically about the situation or make decisions after thinking about the situation, it's ok in my book. Rhetoric in music does reach plenty of people in such a way, but unfortunately the mindless goons who made punk rock popular also made it easy for people to adopt the rhetoric without thinking. And that ruins it for all of us. Q |
