Summer!!

I was writing up a little paper in microsoft word, and I cam across something that kinda freaked me out. Internet was underlined in green, meaning that it had incorrect grammar. It told me that it wasn't internet, but Internet.
Since when did this happen. I never knew tht it was supposed to be capitilized. I mean, it's not really a noun is it? Who made it that way? When you think about it, the 'Internet' is theoretical. There isn't one place called "The internet". It is just a bunch of computers linked together. What is your opinion on internet being capitilized

I think that because the internet is a unique 'place' and that there isn't really any thing like it elsewhere, it should be capatalized. But, because it's such a mainstream word now, it doesn't really need to be capatalized to understand what it is. so really it boils down to user-preference. Personally, I'd use it lowercased.

Dude, LD, Internet has always been capitalized. It's like Arpanet or Telnet, you capitalize them. The stupid people that don't study these kinds of things generalize it as a lowercase word. Thank goodness MS Word catches that problem else nobody would learn.

The Internet is a place if you think about it. Since the Internet is a specific place, like "Toys R Us", it is a proper noun instead of a noun.

ive read an article by Thomas McLaughlin about how every word in any language is derived at some point from experiences which the society it was created it simply accepted that definition. so in other words all words are up for separate interpretation, i.e im going to go internet, or i am on the Internet.

But Snapps, if the internet is a place, where is it? Like someone said before the Unix messup, "universe" isn't capitalized, and it's a place by the same token as internet. After all, the internet is even flying by our heads right now with wireless connections.

Internet is capitalized because it is a proper noun, like Paris, or New York, there is only one.

What version of Word are you using? I just found out that mine underlines "Internet" as a spelling error and leaves "internet" alone.

actually, internet shouldn't be captialized. think of it not from a person's perspective but the computer's. To get on the internet, your computer "talks" to another computer via a cable of some kind, almost like how we as people can get information between one another by letters and through telephones. Notice that we never capitalize those two. It's actually more like a verb in that sense, we can phone someone or mail something to them, only it's the computers internetting, not us.
oh, and as a side note, word processing programs are never perfect and never will be as far as grammar goes. Depending on where internet is used it might need to be capitalized or made lowercase because the english language is just that nuts.

Of course grammar checks on word processors won't ever be perfect. Just don't make mistakes.
"Internet" should and always WILL BE capitalized. The words "internetting" and "internetted" are made-up verbs. "Internet" is a proper noun. Proper nouns are always capitalized. I rest my case. ~Squeek |

But, the question is, what justification is there that makes "Internet" a proper noun? I happen to think it's improper and should be lowercase. Of course, if it is proper, it should be capitalized, but the debate is about whether or not it is proper.
