You also have to take in consideration that yes link has all these weapons, but mario has a lot more speed than him. Hence, even though he has a big fat sword, mario can jump over it after a big swing and stomp his head.
While link is stunned from the head stomp, Mario summons a gigantic Chomp that eats Link. <3
