I already know that this will most likely never happen seeing as FFR is not affiliated with the creators with stepmania, and i'm probably less likely to influence them, but i still like this idea. Oh, and someone let me know if anyone has already thought of this before, 'cause it seems pretty simple to me.
Instead of creating stepfiles the traditional way, as in, entering in arrows and playing them back to see if they fit correctly with the music, you could play the song and imagine the arrows in your head, and play the song like it's already a stepfile. The arrows you press would be placed into the song editing chart and you could edit it normally from there (obviously you won't always play notes directly on time, and you'll probably mess up a few times). You would still need to enter the BPM and offset first so the game knows where the beat is, but other than that, it seems like it would make the process so much easier. On a side note, i would also add a feature to round notes to the nearest, say, 16th note or so (customizable option, not default) while doing the imaginary file creation process, that way you don't have a bunch of orange and green notes everywhere. |

Ctrl+r, this is already featured in the stepfile creator, it always was, as for the 16th note thing, that's already there also, just set your arrows to 16ths and you can't place anything higher than a 16th, so you won't ever wind up with green notes or anything else.

if you make files this way there's an extremely high chance they will suck. nobody does this, since you don't have the time to actually think about patterns and creative stuff and everything ends up generic and unfun (given you can follow sounds well, which i doubt)

Use DDReamStudio, and you'll get the arrows exactly on beat, and be able to figure out complex bpm changes. It is a really awesome stepfile editor, and you all should try it.
edit: I think I might make a tutorial thread someday to help spread the word about it and help people understand how to use it.
