That's highly subjective; I don't think popularity "killed" DDR at all and I've played since 3rd Mix.

Plus, you could say that SM now compared to the SM of three years ago is "popular." The beauty of SM is that it doesn't need to morph itself into something different just because more people start playing it, because it's purely run by the community.

This idea isn't something you would need to participate in and would likely not dramatically affect your gameplay. It's assumed that all of us here play Stepmania for fun in one form or another; you're stating the obvious.
