No.

The director has said, "No."

The manga makes it look like the mother is in Japan, a captive of Tagruato.

The beginning monster and the end monster are the same monster. It couldn't "barely" fit Hud into its mouth. That's why HALF of Hud fell out - the mouth was too big. It was the same monster every time you saw it. According to the director.

2 monsters would explain the incongruity of size and whatnot, though :/

@ sarahxjane, the story doesn't end with the movie. All of these are connected together, and it's amazingly fun to dive deeper and deeper into the origins of the monster. The marketing team was brilliant for not only leaving clues and details behind in the movie, it's also out on the internet for everyone to do a scavenger hunt for.
He's got a point, there's even a 4-part manga prequel to Cloverfield.

OH MY GOD. Are you serious?

Really? That picture?

And there is no incongruity in size. The size remains constant throughout the movie. It's shot from a whole bunch of different angles while it is doing different things. When it's about to eat Hud, that's when it is the LARGEST. I don't know why people are getting confused. The size is consistant.

I walked into the theater half-expecting the monster to be the mechanical smoke from Lost.

Thankfully, I was wrong.

Hud fell out of his mouth because the mouth was too BIG. There's also a chance Hud could have been swallowed and regurgitated. There's no doubt in my mind that ALL of Hud went in to the monster's mouth.

There is only 1 monster - at least, in New York. I'm positive.

Off topic: I still can't explain the smoke monster.

I had no idea that there was a manga prequel.
I shall need to look for it now.

Cloverfield is a street in L.A. It's one of those goverment things where the give something a codename that's a place really far away, like the Manhattan Project (which was done in Arizona)

There's a bunch of reasons. Shox has one of them, the street name is another, and the director also said that "Cloverfield" was the name of the offensive attack against the monster launched by the military.

You know, I saw something on Fox News about Cloverfield being offensive to 9/11 victims. After actually watching the movie, I realized that report was complete and utter poppy****. They make a reference to 9/11 once when the monster's initial attack starts but it's logical. If you were in Manhattan and saw a large "thing" annihilate a building in one hit, wouldn't you think that terrorist were attacking at first? Some people will do anything for drama...

There are several clear cases where they were trying to emulate 9/11. But I wasn't offended or shocked. I still loved the movie.

And Mal, when you see the monster being attacked by the army, would you not agree that it is around the height of a skyscraper; but when Hud, Rob, and Beth are in the helicopter, they are clearly at least the height of 1 and half skyscrapers above the ground; yet, the monster still managed to grab hold of it. Explain, please.

It jumped.

Or it stood up. It's shown on its back legs throughout the movie at several times.

Or the helecopter lowered to get a better look.

Considering it lived under enormous pressure in the ocean, I wouldn't put it past the monster to have a mean vert.

I saw this last Sunday I believe. I bought a slushie, and I couldn't drink it for the whole movie. It made me sick (By the way, wikipedia says the movie was filmed in a way that is supposed to make you sick). I had to throw away my slushie after. Awesome movie though!
