I have always only played with one hand, and I am kind of stuck in a rut now. I can never seem to pass songs that are harder then very challenging. Is playing one-handed an extreme disadvantage or is it just a small thing? Will I have to change my playing technique if I wish to advance any further?

I still play with one-hand... I can pass any song on FFR, and i have AAA'd 18 songs.
If that qualifies as good, then yes. Edit: Yeah, i only play well with one-hand. I learned spread for mashing the f*** out of silence, so i guess I'm "pure" to an extent...

I switched to spread a long time ago because I hated up-down anything.
that and staircases/rolls are way harder. |

Up-down wasn't easy to get used to, in fact, I'm having problems with up-down once again thanks to my mac's adorably small arrow keys.

One-handed playing is more of a disadvantage if you want to FC or AAA, or "get good", or do anything faster. It simply takes more time to achieve the skill level. PA is also affected more by playing one-handed. Getting more technical, fast jumpstreams, rolls, and trills are generally much harder one-handed, especially ones that involve many up and down arrows adjacent to each other.
@Zageron: I believe DarkManticoreX2 plays one-handed, although I'm not sure if he's "pure" one-handed or not, and he's average rank something like 73. And... I'm not quite good (average rank 1630 or so), but I'm pure one-handed, never played anything else on this account.

Manti switched to spread a while ago. He's still probably the best 1-hander on the site though... and he's now pretty frickin good spread, at least in terms of AAAs.

Nothing.

Honestly I don't see why anyone would continue playing one handed if they know for a fact, that any other play style is better. Playing one handed because it's harder and more impressive to get nice scores is stupid too.
Walking is pretty easy but I should just use one leg for the rest of my life 'cause it's harder. |

abosofregginlutely pure one hander here, good? dunno. fc'ed endless dreams at my friends comp but wasn't logged in... pissed me off. i can pass everysong in the game. another thing that pisses me off is once i got over 400 combo on Revo but didn't pass the level cuz i avg missed almost all the jacks... so yeh that pissed me off or it'd be a huge lvl rank jump.
i've fc'ed maybe round 10ish challenging songs one handed? (some off my head: ESC, GO!, Endless Dreams, Sail Away, Hyper Pressure, CIA Rave and some rock and new songs, although the one miss in carol megamix at the end in the same place pisses me off too) and one miss on Max Forever REALLY pissed me off, never want to do that song again. my PA really sux. i seem to be able to FC better on 1.50 and have better PA on 1.75 but avgmiss way more often on harder songs too. |
