There is no use for the oxygen in the Light reactions. After the photolysis of the water molecule via Photosystem 2 (P680), the Oxygen is released through the thylakoid membrane. The 2 protons remain in the thylakoid space to create a proton gradient, used to create ATP through an ATP synthase. The 2 electrons from water are transfered to Photosystem 1 (P700), which then, in short, uses the electrons to reduce an NADP+ into an NADPH.
