I just got my separators yesterday, and I am getting my braces on Monday. Does anyone have any tips for me with my braces? |

You Might not be able to talk at first. Or eat anything Solid.
I had soup when I got home from the orthodontist. <3 soup You can chew gum, but make sure its Sugarless. [So it doesn't stick] I got my braces off 2 months ago. |

Dealing with the pain huh? Well the spacers actually brought tears to my eyes at one point, all I can say is...eat soft food, and deal with it. Braces aren't as bad, they'll only ache for about a day or two then you're good.

It doesn't really hurt too much when you get them on, you'll just feel a bit of pressure on your teeth. For the first few days eat lots of soup, jello, and mashed potatoes. Mmm!
Also, never, ever, EVER eat taffy. Ever. |

Trust me-- eat applesauce...
And use that wax they give you if your gums are hurting... Also, as others have said, don't chew gum.

To the gum theory, I say...
I always chewed gum when I had braces, never checked to make sure if it was sugarless or not- gum is gum. Also, a kind of technique is used for braces gum-chewing, dont stick it up at the top of your teeth between your gums and your lips/cheek on the upper jaw. And avoid putting it on the bottom of you teeth in between the gums and lips/ cheek on your lower jaw. Don't do this because if you do the gum could get stuck on the pointy things of your braces. Keeping the gum on the interior side of your teeth is a good idea and on your molars toward the inside.

I remember when I got braces. It was on Halloween, and I went to a party that night. I couldn't eat any of the delicious treats because my mouth hurt too much. It was just the added bonus of pain.
![]() Anyways, pretty much what everyone else has said so far. The pain won't last long, and just eat softer food until it goes away. |

But I have a special case. I have to eat my food through a straw for the first week or two because of my case.
I have a misplaced tooth that has to be dragged over, and I have major crowding on the bottom, so I will have a whole load of pain over the first week or two. I am just having enough pain with the spacers. My teeth are so crowded that the bones pushing through the gums is causing a lot of pain. THANK GOD FOR ADVIL!!! I think that I OD'd on it, though... |

yeah, spacers were definitely the worst part of the whole experience. just eat gently, and wait it out. it'll go away. and what most people haven't said is DON'T DRINK SODA.
i never once broke a bracket because i willingly gave up soda. the carbonation rapes the cement on your teeth so the brackets break really easy. that's probably the best thing you can do for yourself. and don't chew random objects...like pens...or caps. they'll break **** too. gl with them. i had them for almost three years, because i had a sick overbite. do what they say. wear the rubber bands. it'll just make everything go more quickly. Just do it and get it over with and pray that you make it the whole time you have them on.
