So after getting into a debate on calling this particular bug a roly-poly or a potato bug, nickadeemus and I decided to look it up and settle it once and for all. Our discovery shocked us. We found that there are a large number of names for this cute little insect, including "cheeselog." We now come to the diversly cultured FFR folks with a poll. What do you call these critters:
![]() ![]() Feel free to post where you are from and what they are commonly known as in your area. I'm from Kansas and we call it a roly-poly. Nick is from Washington where it's known as a potato bug.

Well I'm from California and I've heard it called "rolly-poly" and "pillar bug".
Edit: Pillar bug could be some other insect. :\ Not sure. I've heard it called pillar bug for some reason. Last edited by LovelySwimAngel; 07-4-2007 at 11:37 PM.. |

We don't have them in Alberta but seeing as I moderate the cheese content on this site (Unofficially, don't blow your top) I am obligated to choose "Cheeselog"

According to Wikipedia woodlice is their proper name. Searching roly-poly or potato bug led us there.

I've heard it called "pillbug", "sowbug", and "roly-poly"...usually heard it called roly-poly, though. Used to be tons of them in my backyard. In California, by the way.
...lol, cheeselog...

I lived in California and I live in Michigan now in both places everytime someone would see it they would say "Get that Roly-Poly away from me!" That's what people say so i'm gonna go with that.
