I think hitting early is the key. You might not get perfects but at least you'll have a better chance of comboing jacks.

How early? I try to hit early on fast songs, and that seems to cut down on avmisses quite a bit, but I still get a lot. Does it have to be so early that it actually sounds off, or just enough that you'd get a perfect instead of a marvelous if it were stepmania? I don't get FFR.

I think I sound like an idiot today, but that's just a guess.

Well, I don't fully understand jacks either.
In fasts songs like Molto Vivace, where all I care about is maintaining combo, I hit the jacks rather early. For songs with slower, but still annoying jacks like Crystalis or Abtrusity, hit them more accurately (albeit still slightly early). I can't give you a measuring stick, so try to get a feel of what's best for you.
